"Minot 1986" is a superb video of the precious Minot, North Dakota performance on September 1, 1986, when Jeff Scott Soto was on stage even though Mark Boals was still in the band. I think many fans will think, "Oh?" when they hear "September 1, 1986, Jeff Scott Soto". That's because Mark Boals was still in the band at this time. However, it is definitely Jeff who is singing here, and even though Mark is still in the band, Jeff is singing on stage on this day. Of course, Mark has not yet been fired, so there are still recordings of Mark singing for the performances up to September 20 after this performance, and you can check out the performance in the already released title "MARK BOALS YEARS VOLUME 2". Looking back at the historical facts, the record of Jeff standing on stage while Mark was still in the band was also confirmed on September 29th, and this work is one of them, which can be said to be definitive evidence that it was almost decided to fire Mark in the late summer of 1986. Of course, Mark and Jeff were aware of this, but Yngwie and management's intention was to have Jeff stand on the actual stage several times at the same time as the start of the major tour that began the day before this performance (August 31st), so that the handover as a touring singer without any time loss would already be completed by the time of the release of TRILOGY in October. However, this footage is also a very valuable documentary footage, and since this rare performance is recorded as a superb AUD shot, this is a must-see footage that avid fans cannot miss. The camera is shot from the back of the venue, slightly to the right of the center toward the stage, and the image quality and sound quality are excellent, among the best of the era. The camera seems to be fixed to a fence or something, so there is almost no blurring of the image, and the long shots give a good view of the entire venue, while the close-up shots show a clear image, making it an attractively balanced image. Moreover, there is almost no color bleeding due to aging, which is common in AUD images, so it is noteworthy that the image quality is as fresh as if it was recorded just the other day. The performance side is also interesting. For example, in "I'll See The Light, Tonight," a break is inserted immediately after the guitar solo, which is a style unique to the summer of 1986, but on this day, the break point was inserted three times, which was unusual. The insertion of this break can be heard on other recordings from other days that can be heard on the previously released title "MARK BOALS YEARS VOLUME 2," but the early part of the tour was characterized by different timing and number of breaks on each day, and the style has not yet been completely solidified. That's why it's extremely rare to have this position and timing three times, and the fact that it can be confirmed as a video makes it interesting and valuable as research material. Also, since the performances at this time were still short programs accompanied by big bands, the "keyboard solo" → "Icarus' Dream Suite Op.4" is also a short medley of about 3 minutes, but this part is actually a big highlight. This scene is also a scene that passes by if you listen to only the sound of the CD title from other performances, but if you watch this part as a video, you will realize that it was a "visual appealing three minutes" to first focus on the two musical central figures, Yngwie and Jens, and then play the tough "I Am A Viking" in succession to more strongly appeal to the power balance of the band and the magnitude of the song. And from there, you can also gradually feel the skillful composition of the entire show, which makes use of the short program in reverse. Of course, Yngwie's solo is also a big highlight. It is interesting to see how he plays the high-speed phrases at the beginning of the solo only by hammering with both hands on the neck, and his guitar handling, in which he quickly uses his right hand in the middle of picking, is also clearly recorded. There is also a street performance of "Eruption" played with his teeth on this day, but even in such a big scene, the music itself has no gaps, and there are plenty of solo scenes that you can't take your eyes off of until the end. Since he was still in Mark, he probably didn't rehearse with Jeff very often, but in that short period of time, he completely mastered the composition and appeal of the new songs, and you will be amazed at Jeff's high ability as a frontman to perform such a high-quality show right after the start of the US tour. Of course, you will be overwhelmed by the high performance of the band, Yngwie's guitar handling, and the sound. Enjoy this rare performance from the late summer of '86, when the singer was replaced, with this work that boasts excellent sound quality and image quality that is rarely seen in footage from that time!
