The Who in 1969 were busy with live performances due to the huge success of their historic masterpiece "TOMMY". Riding on that wave, they gave a series of great performances at festivals such as the Isle of Wight and Woodstock. They were proud of their momentum, so they came up with the idea of recording their autumn US tour, and the band's sound engineer Bob Pridenn made a 4-track live recording. They also recorded their UK tour after returning to the US, and a total of nearly 40 performances were recorded on a stereo soundboard. If they released a live album based on those, it would be a sufficient stopover until the next studio album...after "TOMMY", it seemed like a perfect idea. However, when it came time to make the album, Pete was upset that Pridenn had not put together notes on the contents of each live recording, so he put the idea on hold. As a result, Pete ordered Pridenn to destroy the live recordings from the autumn of 1969, which had been recorded so well. It sounds like a lie, but it has long been known as a fact, and the details of the story are written in detail again in his autobiography. Instead, they recorded the most recent live performance held after the new year and immediately released it as "LIVE AT LEEDS". Pete's autobiography details how Pryden burned the recording reels (!), but at the same time, Pryden pleaded to be allowed to keep some of the recordings. Fortunately, some of the recordings escaped the danger of being discarded, and were leaked in several parts in the 1990s. In particular, the leak in 1999 produced masterpieces such as the nostalgic Dandelion album "WINTERTIME TRIP". On the other hand, they were dispersed into too many items, and all of them are now difficult to obtain. This is a serious situation in which the finest stereo soundboard cannot be easily enjoyed. "Prof. Stoned" stepped up to put an end to this situation. He carefully examined and adjusted the best parts from the previous items and organized them brilliantly. They are divided into five parts, but the Ottawa performance that was now included in the Super Deluxe Edition of "TOMMY" is excluded. First of all, this time, the stereo soundboard recording from Stony Brook University in New York is released. As expected, it was recorded with the premise of a live album, and the stereo sound quality is impeccable. However, it is an excerpt of the first half of the live, a little from the middle of "TOMMY", and the end of the live, but this was not cut at the time of the leak, but was intentionally recorded by Priden. If nearly 40 performances were recorded, it is natural that there are days when the recording is incomplete. Above all, the Who's performance is so explosive that you don't even notice such things. Even Pete himself said in his autobiography, "No matter how you look at it, we were the best." Since only a small part of the "TOMMY" part was recorded on this day, it quickly jumps to the second half of the live performance, "Summertime Blues", but the performance heard here is more intense than that of Woodstock. In addition, the sound quality is outstanding. The best part is "My Generation". It shows a completely different development from Woodstock, let alone Amsterdam two months ago, which will be released at the same time. If anything, it seems to be a more explosive performance than Leeds. And the bonus track, although the recording date is unknown, includes "Young Man Blues," which was also recorded in the official autumn recording and escaped from being discarded, and this is also amazing. As you listen to it, you will almost forget that it is an incomplete recording. Rather, it is the best stereo soundboard album that condenses the greatness of The Who in the fall of 1969 in one piece! Even Pete himself said in his autobiography, "No matter how you look at it, we were the best" ... The strongest stage that you can be convinced of is on a super high-quality soundboard! !
