Speaking of The Who's 1976 record by Barry Goldstein, "WINTERLAND 1976: BARRY GOLDSTEIN MASTER" is highly acclaimed by enthusiasts and continues to be a bestseller, but another audience recording of his 1976 live performance has been newly discovered. The new Goldstein recording released by JEMS this time is from San Diego on October 7th. Of course, on this day, "SAN DIEGO 1976: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES" by Mike Millard, a legendary taper and his friend, was released. There, Millard was late, so JEMS patched in another recording from the same day at the time of release, but this time Goldstein is another audience recording. Interestingly, he also missed the beginning of the opening "I Can't Explain", but at least he captured the live performance in a more complete state than Millard. Although the sound image has a sense of distance, it is not as clear as the stereo mirrored recording, but the mono recording is more effective in terms of the closeness and power of the sound. What's even more surprising is that in Goldstein's recording, the sound of John Entwistle's bass comes closer to him from "My Wife" sung by John Entwistle, making it very powerful! This suggests that his bass was resounding at a considerable volume in the venue, but it's surprising that the volume was recorded with a solid grain without saturating. This phenomenon was also seen in the mirrored recording "SAN DIEGO 1976~", but it was also surprising that this Goldstein recording captured it in a more balanced way. Rather, in the mirrored recording, John's sound was a little too loud until the "TOMMY" part. Then, from the "TOMMY" part, the volume of Roger Daltrey's voice increases, and in the song where he is the main character, his passionate singing is clearly conveyed. Because it is a mono recording, his powerful singing voice comes closer as a mass of sound. In addition, the other source used at the beginning of the mirrored recording was so far away that the sound image was blurred, but this one is much easier to hear. The recording quality, which highlights the good balance of the performance throughout, is a major attraction. Of course, in front of the stereo feeling and clarity of the mirrored recording, it is undoubtedly a monaural audience with a vintage flavor, but on the other hand, there is no doubt that it is a first-time sound source that is attractive enough to fully enjoy the power of mono. And on this day, the sharpness of the performance, which seems to be the end of the tour, was clear, but especially when you listen to the light development centered on Pete in "Summertime Blues" and the medley development "My Generation" in mono, it is also exceptional.
