From the 1973 US tour when "Sweet Nighter" was released, the performances in Lenox, Massachusetts on September 2nd and Boston on October 29th were recorded as couplings with soundboard recordings from FM on-air masters. The live performances of this period by J. Zavenul and W. Shorter, who resonated with Miles, who was rapidly becoming electric from the late 60s, and further evolved his methodology, included many songs from the same album, such as the ending song "Boogie Woogie Waltz", which was a new song at the time, as well as electric Miles tunes such as "Directions", "In a Silent Way" and "It's About That Time", and many songs not included on the album. The intense interplay in the improvisation in the middle of the show is particularly intense, and Miroslav Vitous' playing around this time is also worth listening to. Also be sure to check out the drumming by Greg Errico, who only participated during this period and never appeared on a studio album. This was the band's crossover period, when their superb technique transcended the genres of jazz and rock, and this is a must-listen for fans of the band, as it showcases the band's explosive energy as they explored new jazz styles in the midst of chaos.
