The legendary single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" sparked the 80s charity boom and became the origin of the 20th century's biggest event "LIVE AID". A video masterpiece that reveals the secret story behind its birth is here. The true identity of this work is the special program "THE BAND AID STORY" by the prestigious British BBC. It is a documentary program produced in 2004, the 20th anniversary of the project. Of course, this work is not the British broadcast itself, but "This is how an unprecedented charity band was formed", which was broadcast as a part of a certain broadcasting association's famous program "BS World Documentary". It is a Japanese version complete with subtitles, dubbing and comments. Our shop archives many music programs with the finest masters by core record enthusiasts, and this work can be said to be the best masterpiece of that collection. The video quality of the 2004 production and 2008 broadcast is completely official DVD class, and the precious material is overwhelming because it is the prestigious BBC. The stars of the 80s shine with youthfulness in the beautiful master quality images, and the extravagance of them appearing one after another 20 years later when they have become superstars is only possible with the BBC. And above all, the content of the program is wonderful. It deals with both the different moods of "80s pop music" and "global social issues" properly, and beautifully depicts the sincere messages and the humor of the participants without tarnishing them. Moreover, the skill of a certain broadcasting association, which translates it into Japanese, is also perfect. "BS World Documentary" deals with a variety of themes, but the appropriate choice of words that capture the true meaning of the comments without adding any strange direction is a perfect example of a documentary. It is a shame that it will be forgotten after just one broadcast, but it even has an elegance. This work, which contains such a masterpiece program, is divided into three major sections. Let's introduce it in order. Opening: Towards the formation of BAND AID (about 12 minutes) The first section is the journey to the birth of BAND AID. This project started when Bob Geldof saw a news program reporting on the famine in Ethiopia, which was also broadcast by the BBC. Footage from the program is also shown, and the program director talks about that time. Only the BBC can show not only the project itself, but also its roots in the real way. Geldof, shocked by the news, consulted Midge Ure about what they could do, and Gary Kemp and Simon Le Bon joined them. It was not a luxurious project from the beginning, but the story grew little by little. What's interesting is when Gary Kemp says, "I'm going to Japan the next day, so please call me in Japan." The legendary SPANDAU BALLET's first visit to Japan was in early November 1984. In the program, they talk about how they had to rush to make a Christmas single, and it really comes across. Main story: The legendary session on November 25, 1984 (about 23 minutes)The main focus of this work is the luxurious session that took place in London on November 25, 1984. It covers the whole process from the morning of that day until the end of the recording. Geldof, Midge, and producer Trevor Horn enter the studio first, but it's funny how they're worried, saying, "No one's here yet. It's Sunday morning, so I wonder if they'll really come." Then, one by one, they really do arrive. Paul Weller, Sting, Paul Young, SPANDAU BALLET, Simon Le Bon... Big names appear one after another. When asked by a reporter to "send a message to the people of Ethiopia," Steve Norman replies carefree, "I'm going to be there for a concert next year, so look forward to it," and BANANARAMA is surprised by the commotion at the scene and is confused, saying, "I came here in my everyday clothes." If you think about it, it's unprecedented for such stars to come together for a recording session, and everything is a first experience. The feeling of searching is real. And while the stars are gathering one after another, Boy George does not show up. Perhaps he had forgotten the offer, but on the day of the session, he was in New York, on the other side of the ocean. "I got a call from Bob at 4am. I'd met him at parties before, but we weren't close enough to be woken up so early in the morning. He told me in an Irish accent to come back, and I was surprised," George says, which is funny, and Geldof scolds him, saying, "Get on the Concorde in an hour and a half!" After that, George really flies to London, and it's funny there too. "When I got to the studio, I ran into Simon Le Bon. We didn't get along at the time. We had a fight about Simon's girlfriend. But there were a lot of cameramen, so I put my arm around his shoulder as I went in," he says frankly. I think "she" is Simon's wife, Yasmin, but what happened between him and George...? Furthermore, when listening to the playback, he says things like, "Oh, that's a gay voice (his translation sense is also amazing)," and he seems to be the hidden protagonist of this work. I've talked a lot about Boy George, but this is only a small part of it. The mood on set when no one wanted to sing it first, Bono arguing with Geldof because he didn't like the lyrics (this is actually the best part), Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi getting drunk and not hitting the right notes, Phil Collins appearing as an ordinary old man and silencing the studio with his amazing drumming, Geldof admitting that the song wasn't actually finished while recording... The backstage of the birth of this historic masterpiece is revealed in detail. End: The boom and the reality 20 years later (about 14 minutes) The last section documents the world that was changed by the completed single. The record was pressed in a rush and became a big hit, becoming a boom, and Geldof even headed to Ethiopia. His passion then spread to America, sparking USA FOR AFRICA, and the biggest event of the century, "LIVE AID," was realized. The way that pure goodwill brings success and changes the world is as moving as a Hollywood movie. But, however. This program is not just a success story, but a documentary based on reality. There are no happy endings in reality. Bono speaks solemnly. "I don't know the exact amount, but I think the amount raised by Live Aid was about 250 million pounds. I was surprised at the huge amount. Everyone was proud that they had contributed a little. But the reality was harsh. I learned that Africa was paying the same amount as the donation as interest on its debt every month." Yes, this film was made in 2004, not 1984. We talk about what has changed and what has not changed in 20 years. Geldof also mutters, "Our Band Aid was only a temporary relief." It's a very heavy conclusion, but it wasn't in vain. As mentioned above, on the day of the session, the musicians were making light-hearted jokes saying, "I'll go to a concert next year," but they realized the real social problems and shared them with the world. There are problems on this planet, everything will not be solved like in the stories, and if we don't know, we can't move forward. This documentary depicts the weight of that with a historic masterpiece single. BAND AID, where the stars of the 80s gathered together and played a luxurious session. This is a masterpiece documentary that depicts the truth sharply and skillfully. It is fun as a behind-the-scenes look at the production of a masterpiece single, and it is also interesting to watch as the origin of "LIVE AID". And it is heavy enough to make you think about the world that still has problems. Every time you watch it, you will discover something new, think about it, and be moved.
