“ROCK AID ARMENIA” is a luxurious charity project realized in 1990. The two videos have been reprinted in the highest quality ever. The highlight of this project is a cover of DEEP PURPLE's "Smoke On The Water" co-starring gorgeous musicians. In addition to the main single, a compilation album of participating artists, a video collection of clips, a production documentary video, etc. were released. This work is a combination of two titles, the clip version "THE EARTHQUAKE VIDEO" and the documentary version "THE MAKING OF SMOKE ON THE WATER". Now, let's introduce each one individually. [Disc 1: THE EARTHQUAKE VIDEO (clip edition)] First up is a collection of clips from participating artists. At the time, it was mainly distributed on VHS, but for this work, the laser disc version released in Japan has been precisely digitized. Clips of the 15 participating artists follow, and the lineup is amazing. There are North American types such as BON JOVI, FOREIGNER, and RUSH, but the main one is the British Empire. Huge bands from the HR/HM and progressive rock genres will be appearing in droves. The point is the sense of the times. When you look at the band names, the lineup reminds you of the 70's bravery, but the video is completely glamorous and 80's. ASIA, MIKE AND THE MECHANICS, and THE FIRM appeared, and the big bands also threw in a lot of 80's clips that seemed to show off their active style, rather than classics. DEEP PURPLE chose "Perfect Strangers," GENESIS chose "Mama," and PINK FLOYD chose "One Slip." It's not the scene that fans most desire, but it evokes intense nostalgia...that's the kind of video collection. For example, YES. Although the classic song “I’ve Seen All Good People” is included, that version is a live clip of “90125 YES”. Trevor Rabin in a modern art-style T-shirt, and John Anderson, who is unsure if it's fashionable or sleepwear. The ultimate character is Chris Squire, who has almost Sting's hairstyle and wears a mysterious costume with a hose like a Zaku pipe attached to his shoulder. If they are also a mystery, then the video processing that shows them is also a mystery. Animated beams of light are drawn that seem to say, "It's a spotlight," and a number of clumsy processes are layered on top of each other, making it difficult to even call it "CG." 1940s-style people who may symbolize "Good People" also appear, but the dilemma that the members and the footage themselves are outdated makes my spine tingle. It almost has a retro-future feel of a classic science fiction movie. The main song “Smoke On The Water ‘90” concludes the group of clips. Like "We Are The World" and "Stars," the heavyweights of the heavyweights appear one after another. To name a few...In addition to the originator group of Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore, the rhythm section is Chris Squire and Roger Taylor. Vocals: Bryan Adams, Paul Rodgers, Bruce Dickinson. Dave Gilmore, Tony Iommi, Alex Lifeson, Brian May on guitar. Keith Emerson and Geoff Downs on keyboards. Furthermore, although they do not appear on screen, Jon Lord and John Paul Jones also participate in the backing. Not only are there gorgeous celebrities, but there are also stars who like Japanese people, as if it were a Japanese project. The gorgeous "Smoke On The Water" where they layer sounds one after another. It's not a dedicated new song like "We Are The World" and "Stars," so it doesn't feature a lot of highlights, but it's still powerful for those of us who are engrained in the individuality of each song. Ritchie's riff rides on Keith's synth, and while Gilmore and Alex's guitars play simultaneously, Rogers' beautiful voice flows out. If I had to choose the MVP, it would be Brian May. Even among the fiercest players who are famous around the world for their uniqueness, Mei's sound stands out and shines. It's not about ``you can tell who someone is by just one note'', it's about the intensity of ``one note makes you forget everything else''. Isn't he the best guitarist in human history, on par with Jimi Hendrix, not ``May of Queen''? In any case, it is an intense and unparalleled 5 minutes and 10 seconds rarely seen in rock history. [Disc 2: THE MAKING OF SMOKE ON THE WATER (Documentary)] What follows is the making of “Smoke On The Water ‘90.” This is a big favorite, after all, the big names come to the studio one after another to sing, play, and talk. The behind-the-scenes and comments are fierce. This session was held in four parts from July to September 1989, and is recorded chronologically in this work. ●First session: July 8, 1989 This work immediately begins a luxurious session, with a light interlude of documents that talk about the damage caused by the Armenian earthquake and the significance of the project. The first session to appear will be in July. Here, Roger Taylor & Chris Squire record the backing that is the basis of everything, and Paul Rodgers and Ian Gillan will add songs. It's spectacular just to see Roger and Chris side by side, but it's also nice to see the rhythm track hidden behind the luxurious goods exposed in the finished version. Then the guide guitar comes on, and then Rodgers and Gillan's singing comes on...and the song gradually becomes complete. Chris says, ``If Paul's song gets on here, you'll get hooked,'' but it's interesting that the professional recording procedure is revealed by a super big name. Furthermore, when Gillan was asked about his impressions of the backing track, he added a few comments and said, ``Wow, Amateur-san makes me cry.'' Of course, the studio is filled with laughter, but even the extravagance is luxurious. ●Second session: August 5, 1989 The second session was held one month later in August. As expected, you can see how difficult it is to coordinate the schedules of super big names. From here, gorgeous quality recordings such as guitars and vocals begin. Brian May and Dave Gilmour recover from broken bones. The narration says, ``The men who have sold 120 million albums...the first session between these two will be realized,'' and it is truly a gorgeous sight and sound like no other. The scene where May listens to Gilmore's track and says, ``That's a pretty good piece of shit,'' is also chilling. Particularly interesting is the interview with Gilmore. Let's write it down a bit. -- Talking about PINK FLOYD... Gilmore: (Eh? That's it!?) --- "You've been touring a lot over the past two years. Where does that energy come from?" Gilmore: It's been fun to do it without the troublesome people. is. --Is that about Roger Waters? Gilmore: Come on (lol) Furthermore, on this day too, Gillan sings, but just as he was singing smoothly, he suddenly stopped and said, ``I'm tired.'' What the heck? When there was an uproar, Gilan said, ``I forgot the lyrics.'' Eh!? It's "Smoke On The Water"? Have you risked your life to sing it thousands of times? No matter how much you forget all the songs in the world, you can't forget this one... ●Third session: August 27, 1989 The third session will be held in another three weeks. Here, in addition to Brian May, who appears again, Tony Iommi and Ritchie Blackmore come to play guitar. The sight of Richie playing alone with a contemplative expression is wonderful, but the must-see is May and Iommi. The two, who are old friends, play along side by side and respond to interviews. The beauty of this work is that it's not just overdubs, but there are plenty of scenes where big names line up and play and talk. These two can be seen sessioning not only "Smoke On The Water" but also THE SHADOWS' "Apache". ●4th session: September 10, 1989 The last session was in September. The album is completed with Keith Emerson & Jeffrey Downs' synths, Alex Lifeson's guitar, and songs by Bruce Dickinson, Bryan Adams, and Triple Gillan. Each of them is a highlight, but it's Keith who steals the show. The rock keyboard giant came up with the idea of incorporating the phrase "Fanfare For Common Man" and layered brilliant improvisation into "Smoke On The Water." Furthermore, there is even a duet scene with a single piano alongside Downs. The two improvise while playfully exposing their characters. There is no ego at all, it is a beautiful and heartwarming scene where you simply enjoy the “sound” of the place. A truly luxurious feast. A documentary in which the greats create the unparalleled "Smoke On The Water '90" in a collection of clips, each of which exudes the flavor of the times. To be honest, this project had an unremarkable image in the midst of the charity rush of the 1980s, but its brilliance was exceptional...it is a masterpiece that we are now aware of. This album is packed full of the 80's heroes that we love so much. Disc 1 (77:15) ROCK AID ARMENIA: THE EARTHQUAKE VIDEO Japanese Laser Disc Edition 1. Introduction 2.
