Tomasz Stanko, the great trumpeter who represents the ECM label, Poland's treasure and a leader in European jazz, has passed away... The sudden news of his death spread around the world. However, the music he left behind will remain immortal. This is the first performance of a great performance by an all-star band! Stanko was born in Rzeszow, Poland in 1942, and grew up under the communist regime of the former Soviet Union. He was inspired by American jazz on the radio and by the Dave Brubeck concert he saw as a student, and set out on the path to jazz. As Stanko himself later said (for me, all life is "Kind of Blue"), he was greatly influenced by Miles Davis. A major turning point for Stanko was when he was a member of Edward Vecera's group, and he was the first Eastern European to record a leader album for ECM, attracting the attention of fans around the world, and Stanko continued to be active as the "face of ECM" for many years until his death. The '90s was the most fulfilling period of his career, when he released a succession of great albums from ECM. On February 8, 1997, in Stanko's hometown of Rega, Poland, the performance featured an all-star sextet of ECM's finest trio, Bobo Stenson on piano, Palle Danielsson on bass, and Jon Christensen on drums, along with Sweden's most powerful double tenor saxophonists, Bernd Rosengren and Joachim Milder, who are also familiar names on ECM albums. This two-disc set has been recorded in its entirety over the course of more than an hour and a half on the label's own carefully mastered, high-quality stereo soundboard!!!
