THE THREE DEGREES in the 1970s, when "Whispering Angels" was a huge hit all over the world and they were also extremely popular in Japan. A legendary program featuring them is now being released. This work includes the music variety program "Big Show" from a certain public broadcasting station. Among them, the special episode of THE THREE DEGREES, "The World's Lovers: Welcome to The Three Degrees," which was broadcast on January 18, 1976, has been made into a DVD (since it was broadcast at the beginning of the year, the program was recorded in 1975. The title "1975" also follows the recording timing). The content of this work is amazing above all else, but the quality is also shocking. It must be an air check with time captions, but there are almost no dubbing marks, white line noise, color fading, or running distortion (it's not completely nonexistent, but it's not zero). It's so beautiful that it feels like you're witnessing the broadcast in real time. The beauty of this image is so striking that it makes you think back to "January 1976," when it was broadcast. After all, the beginning of 1976 was only six months after the release of the first Betamax home machine, and VHS had not yet been released (the first machine, the HR-3300, was released on October 31 of the same year). At the time, the starting salary for a college graduate was about 90,000 yen, while a Betamax deck cost about 230,000 yen and a 60-minute tape cost 4,500 yen. In other words, you had to be prepared to spend three months' worth of salary to record it. Furthermore, if they had repeatedly played it with that strong feeling, the beauty of the image would have been lost, and the know-how of video tape storage had not been established in the first place. It is truly a miracle... no, it is a mysterious beauty of the image. The beauty of the image has become so long that I have unintentionally made this introduction long, but the real shock is the content itself. The program is centered on their performance, but there is no reuse of existing footage, it is original to the program. Moreover, it is super rich. The band will also feature Nobuo Hara and Sharp & Flats, and they will perform not only the usual English lyrics, but also Japanese lyrics, and even some amazing pop song covers. Here is a summary of the contents. Japanese performance Original: Whisper of an Angel/Bitter Tears Cover: Younger Boy (★)/Yokohama, Yokosuka (★) English performance The Three Degrees, Lovers of the World: It's Impossible/Soul Train Theme/Love is a Chanson/Kiss Me Goodnight (★) Others: Outlaws of the Wilderness/Musical "Cabaret" Medley/Maybe This Time/I'm a Woman/This Is My Life (★)/Love Train *Note: The ★ mark indicates songs that were not heard on the traditional LP "Live in Japan". ...And so on. The English songs are also wonderful, like a visual version of "Live in Japan," but THE THREE DEGREES sings Candies and Downtown Boogie Woogie Band songs in lisping Japanese...it's dizzying. Ohyoi and E.H. Eric are the narrators of the middle part of "Yokohama Yokosuka" and the two are also hosts of the show, and their exchange is a highlight. There is also a pantomime corner by Ohyoi, but even more than that, his talk is silly (sorry!) and the best. As soon as he appears, he says "Wonderful, Two-da-ful! Three-da-ful!!" and when introducing THE THREE DEGREES, he calls Valerie Holiday "ballerina Hori-san," Sheila Ferguson "Sheila-san from the gas company," and Fayette Pinkney "the one who finally gets to go on a picnic." Although the production is a clear reflection of the Western music of the time, the show's runaway momentum continues, with THE THREE DEGREES wearing furisode kimonos and even dancing to Gion Kouta. Although THE THREE DEGREES were immensely popular in Japan, they even sang "Younger Boy" and "Yokohama Yokosuka" in Japanese for the show. This is a record where you can enjoy the legendary show, where the entertainment spirit explodes, with miraculous visual beauty. A cultural heritage of the history of Western music in Japan. A legendary Japanese show has been released. With miraculous visual beauty that makes it hard to believe it was made at a time when home videos were super expensive, you can enjoy the shocking show where the three perform "Younger Boy" and "Yokohama Yokosuka".
