The Who's 1989 reunion tour left many fans confused by Pete Townshend's hearing loss, which prevented him from playing electric guitar, and by the expanded band lineup that included now-familiar support musicians. While this period in the Who's history is often overlooked, the 21st century has seen a steady stream of superb audience recordings unearthed, leading to renewed appreciation for the tour's merits. First, Pete's decision to switch from electric to acoustic guitar, and then the addition of more musicians, bore fruit, making this a groundbreaking tour that for the first time recreated the meticulous sound of Who albums onstage. Even on albums like "Tommy," acoustic guitars were often used more than electric, and during the Keith Moon era, the band's limited lineup led to wilder sounds. However, the '89 tour utilized cutting-edge technology to recreate the rich sound of albums previously unattainable for the Who. A prime example of this is "Pinball Wizard." Many enthusiasts were surely moved by the sight of Pete playing the intro on delicate acoustic guitar, just like the album version. This groundbreaking tour has been the subject of official live albums, a video of the June "TOMMY" re-enactment, and even leaked pro shots of several performances. One performance that has been completely overlooked is the live radio broadcast from Dallas' Cotton Bowl in September. Because this was a literal live broadcast, there are no pre-FM recordings. Furthermore, it has been completely overlooked, having only one incomplete CD release until now. However, the version released this time is based on an air-checked version recorded on a Maxell high-position cassette tape at the time. While using the same stereo soundboard recording, its rawness is distinct from both official live albums and radio performances that are meticulously mixed for broadcast. The live broadcast-like feel truly captures the charm of the 1989 performance, where the dynamic sound of a large band was played with the same intricate detail as the album. What's more, it's also huge that John Entwistle is not only alive and well, but also has a vibrant presence. By the way, at the time of release, the pitch was left raised, but for this release it has been properly adjusted to make it easier to listen to. Westwood One Live Broadcast UPGRADE!!!
