Woodstock is The Who's greatest performance of all time. A new, definitive version of the performance is now being released as "Definitive Woodstock Festival 1969." Needless to say, the day was filmed for the movie, and footage already exists. However, the film version wasn't the only recording of their performance. Amateur cameramen also filmed from the wings using newly released video cameras. While the "Another Look" footage of Jimi Hendrix's performance has been officially released, The Who was also shot using a similar technique. While this footage has been available for some time, enthusiasts have now taken the plunge and remastered it in 4K using cutting-edge technology. While the footage has been available in recent years with improved image quality, this remaster delivers exceptional clarity, even in black and white, and is truly impressive even today. For example, even with 4K remasters, there are many instances where older footage has been over-processed, resulting in an unpleasant, overly sharp image. There are plenty of instances where you might be tempted to point out, "The original footage wasn't that sharp, was it?" However, this remaster of black-and-white video footage achieves a truly natural clarity, captivating you with its sheer clarity. While the stunning image quality alone is undeniable, the meticulous restoration, including the song order and missing sections, is truly impressive. The editing, too, is meticulous, eliminating the need for clarity that has come before in black-and-white footage. To conserve videotape, the filmmaker frequently paused recording between songs and when the performance seemed to have stopped. However, VCRs of the time were not very fast at pausing and resuming, resulting in a missed shot of Abbie Hoffman coming onstage and nearly interrupting the show. These gaps are easily recaptured by the inclusion of a "Missing Footage" caption and a wait time display on the blacked-out screen, further enhancing the clarity of the footage. In particular, "Shakin' All Over," a song whose film version has yet to be unearthed (and may never have been filmed), features a blackout for the entire song, so you might as well go to the bathroom during that time (lol). Furthermore, since this version was created with the intention of being released on video streaming sites, the Woodstock footage was omitted and therefore not used as a replacement. This decision actually resulted in a blessing in disguise, allowing us to enjoy the familiar "Summertime Blues" performance in a literal "another look" in black-and-white video. While this main black-and-white video footage is essentially a single-camera pro shot, it captures the band members with powerful angles and close-ups, making it an excellent piece of footage that never gets boring. For example, Woodstock's performance is often characterized by its overwhelmingly intense intensity, but the video itself conveys a humorous atmosphere, starting with Pete, during "Tommy's Holiday Camp." Even the infamous Hoffman incident, Pete's frustrated and anger after kicking him out, was captured perfectly. By effectively supplementing the color footage from the film version released outside of Woodstock, you can enjoy almost the entire legendary stage performance on video (and the editing is also smooth). The best part is that the audio is meticulously synchronized with the remastered version by ProfStoned. This results in a flawless video and audio experience, a must-see for all rock fans!
