In January 2009, a joint concert by Clapton and Beck was held at Saitama Super Arena. It was a live performance that became a hot topic because it was a joint concert by big names who could tour the world on their own. This type of concert is rare now, but there was a time in the late 60s when festivals where many artists gathered together were popular. Perhaps it was a remnant of that, but in the past, joint concerts were held in various combinations both domestically and internationally. And the 1973 Japan tour of Ten Years After, which is recorded on this album, was held on a joint stage with Albert Hammond. They did not perform on stage together, so it was not a joint performance in the strict sense, and Albert Hammond was the opening act and played the role of warming up the audience at the beginning. This album contains the complete Ten Years After concert at the Budokan on May 23, 1973, including the opening act Albert Hammond's part. [Albert Hammond] His son may be more famous now, but there must be something special about the name Albert Hammond for fans of a certain generation. He is still active, and in 2016 he performed in Japan, and there is a growing momentum for him to be reevaluated. Although he was not a big hit in the United States, he was well-received in the UK, receiving an order of merit, and he has had many hits in Japan as well. Albert Hammond's first visit to Japan was in 1973, when his song "Blue Skies of California" was a hit, and his name was listed on the ticket as "Ten Years After. Featuring Albert Hammond." First, Albert Hammond appeared on the Budokan stage as the opening act. He was not accompanied by a band, and performed the opening act for about 40 minutes alone with only an acoustic guitar. In terms of their popularity in the US and other countries, they are not as well known as Ten Years After, so they are treated as an opening act, but in Japan, they are worthy of being "co-stars," and even though they are completely different types of music, the audience who came to the Budokan for Ten Years After was excited. The set list was selected from the two albums that had already been released at this point, and they also performed a cover of Jose Feliciano's song "Rain Whisper." [Ten Years After] After Albert Hammond's opening act ended, and the atmosphere in the venue changed completely with the introduction of "Ten Years After!" by the host. In front of the audience who were excited with anticipation, the show opened with "One Of These Days." However, because the melody is based on blues, the audience who cheered at first seemed to be quietly listening to the performance unfolding on the stage. Ten Years After did not care about the audience, and simply played one hot and dense sound after another, performing a performance that left no time to breathe. This discrepancy between the consciousness of the audience and the stage may be a part that makes you feel the era. Ten Years After's Japan tour was evaluated as a masterpiece even at the time, and in particular, the scene where Leo Lyons' bass guitar string broke due to his too intense playing is famous as one of the most famous scenes in the history of Japan tours. This work is a document of that day. This scene, which could only be known from documents until now, is vividly brought back to life in the present day. And in fact, there is a sequel to this scene, and as a transition while the strings are being replaced, the other members improvise a rendition of the Beatles' "Get Back". The audience is delighted by the sudden improvisation. It is probably very rare for such an incident to occur on a Ten Years After stage. [AT BUDOKAN 1973] This work is a record of a concert in which two completely different musical acts, Albert Hammond and Ten Years After, stood on the same stage, albeit as the opening act and the main act, which is an unthinkable combination nowadays. The original master, which has never been available anywhere before, has been provided by the recorder himself and completely recorded. The full concert, including the opening act with a happening that could only be known from literature, is completely recorded with the first appearance sound source. The Budokan performance from 1973, one year before Ten Years After disbanded, was recorded in full, including the opening act Albert Hammond. Although they have reunited many times in the past, now that Alvin Lee is gone, that is no longer possible. This is a record of Ten Years After's precious 1973 visit to Japan.
