Steps Ahead Michael Brecker, Mike Manieri Steps Ahead/France 1985 FM Broadcast Edition

This superb release, featuring official stereo soundboard recordings that were suddenly rebroadcast this summer (2025), has arrived, perfectly captured on two discs for fans to enjoy. In 1985, following a lineup change from the album "Modern Times," bassist Eddie Gomez was replaced by Victor Bailey, creating a more powerful sound. This live performance was held at the Nice Jazz Festival in Nice, France on July 13th, from the 1985 tour. The previous recording suffered from tape deterioration and was recorded in mono. However, this new release offers a solid stereo sound. Tracks "Sumo" and "Trains," from the 1986 album "Magnetic," are also performed, making this a live performance that likely marks the debut of the album. Michael's tenor is of course a highlight, but the diverse EWI bend technique, which debuted on the "Magnetic" album, is also a highlight. It's also nice that each track features a solid solo section, including Mainieri's aesthetic vibraphone, Victor Bailey's virtuoso bass, and Chuck Loeb's smooth guitar playing. This rebroadcast included commentary by the show's hosts at the beginning of each track (including band member introductions), but this has been edited out.
