A Sly Stone tribute project is finally here! This item features the original US LP of Sly & the Family Stone's classic album "Fresh." Why "Fresh"? Let me explain. In 1973, Sly produced the follow-up to his equally undisputed classic "Riot," but he destroyed the master and re-recorded the album to release as "Fresh." This work, of course, ranks alongside "Stand" and "Riot" as Sly & the Family Stone's most iconic works. While the vinyl version was out of print for a long time, "Fresh" was released on CD in Japan in 1991. However, the "Fresh" included on this CD was completely different from the "Fresh" version from its vinyl days (and, of course, different from the US CD version). Since it had been out of print in Japan for many years (despite being beloved), music fans were ecstatic when it was finally released on CD. While initially unnoticed, this Japanese CD is completely different from previous "Fresh" releases, surprising listeners not only in Japan but around the world. That was "Fresh," using the master that was discarded in 1973. When Sly's entire catalog was digitally remastered in 2007, the 1991 Japanese "Fresh" recording was adopted worldwide and remains so to this day (including subscription services). So why is this item featuring the original US LP of this album now available? Of course, it's recorded in the original analog version, but the first pressing of that original was cut by the legendary Bob Ludwig. The "RL" stamp is discreetly engraved into the runoff. This album sounds incredibly good, even as an RL cut. While "Stand" and "Riot" have been released on high-quality CDs, for some reason, this album has never been released on a high-quality CD. The existence of this "RL" version more than makes up for that shortcoming. Ludwig's cuttings have produced many high-quality recordings, not only of rock but also of jazz and soul, so be sure to check them out. The difference between the original and the 1991 version will be immediately apparent upon listening. With the exception of the first track, "In Time" (the only song that's the same on both tracks), they're completely different. While the '91 version may have a slightly more flashy sound, both are equally impressive. "I Don't Know (Satisfaction)" features some lines resembling the Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," which is a charming addition. Larry Graham, who left the band after the release of "Riot," is also said to feature on two tracks, so it might be worth listening to both and trying to find that bass sound. Listening to this item allows you to experience two different kinds of "freshness." Original Sly vinyl records are all difficult to obtain, and this trend will likely become even more pronounced in the future. With the recent vinyl boom, the "RL" album has become even more highly esteemed. Prices for this album and other original Sly records are sure to soar. I highly recommend acquiring this item.
