From the Japan tour accompanying the release of "TAKEN BY FORCE" in 1978, when SCORPIONS first came to Japan, the performance at Nakano Sunplaza in Tokyo on April 23rd will feature a completely new original master that is different from the existing sound source. It is decided to use it directly and release it as a high-quality audience recording and complete recording version. SCORPIONS' first performance in Japan before Uli Jon Roth (credited at the time was Ulrich Roth) was from April 23rd to April 27th, with 3 performances in Tokyo and 1 performance each in Nagoya and Osaka. Five performances were held. Of these, the performances at Nakano Sunplaza on April 24th and 27th were officially recorded, and the masterpiece "TOKYO TAPES", an official live work based on them, has left a strong impression on fans. This work includes approximately 2 hours of the show on April 23rd, the first performance in Japan prior to the official recording. This April 23rd show was recorded on the same day using the newly discovered original master cassette and was released under the title "SPEEDY'S COMING: First Night In Japan", but the sound source unearthed this time is also from Trader. This is a new master that has not been distributed at all. The previous releases have received high praise from enthusiasts since their release, with a high sense of stability and excellent symmetry that allows you to thoroughly enjoy the live performance against the background of the mellow and pleasant tape texture. On the other hand, the new master that has appeared this time is characterized by sound quality with higher brightness and sharp sound edges. Although there are some scenes where the treble is too strong and it feels a little noisy, the sound image that vividly captures the cheers and applause in the audience is more powerful than "SPEEDY'S COMING" and is reminiscent of a live tape, and the listener is filled with excitement. You will be able to feel the vibe typical of the early SCORPIONS, full of passion. The opening song, “All Night Long,” which is not included in the studio album, is a must-see. Klaus Meine shows off his powerful and relaxed vocals from the beginning, and declares the beginning of the live performance. In the first MC, he expresses his gratitude by saying, "Thank you very much for the warm welcome in Japan," and then, in clearly audible Japanese, says, "How are you? You're wonderful." He shows off his pro-Japanese style. In the next song, "Pictured Life," Klaus' vocals, Rudolf Schenker's sharp rhythm, and Ulrich's melodious guitar filled the venue with the dark and melancholic colors of early SCORPIONS. Like these songs, what was characteristic of SCORPIONS at the time was the number led by Ulrich, which was leaning towards Jimi Hendrix. In particular, the fourth song "Polar Nights", led by his MC, overwhelms the listener with the intense riff and solo play typical of Jimi Hendrix. "We'll Burn The Sky", where the guitars woven by Rudolph and Ulrich are beautiful, is a big highlight of the entire live performance. Klaus singing earnestly, the melancholy tone of the guitar, the emotion at the end where the pent-up passion is released...all are simply wonderful. “In Trance” sublimates the sinking negativity into beauty, and “Fly To The Rainbow” emphasizes the drama by using “In Search Of The Peace Of Mind” from the 1st album as an intro. It was a worldwide success, with a sense of openness (Ulrich's powerful guitar playing in the second half is as overwhelming as that of Ritchie Blackmore from the same period!). If you listen to their live performances, you'll understand why the SCORPIONS of this era still receive stronger support from Japanese fans than they did in the '90s. Songs such as "Suspender Love" and "He's A Woman, She's A Man" that are sandwiched between these dramatic and melodious songs are easy-going lyrically and have a disjointed impression, but they are comparable in terms of powerful performances. there is no. The rhythm created by Francis Bucholz's bass and Herman Larebel's drums is also solid, and the latter one, especially the loud one, is worth listening to. The rock numbers "Speed's Coming" and "Catch Your Train", which make an impression in the middle of the live performance, have a presence that cannot be missed. The exchange between Klaus and the audience after the performance of "Speed's Coming" and the introduction of the members that follow can be clearly heard with a brightness that exceeds that of the previous episodes. Complete recording was achieved on the same day). The main part of the set list concludes with the climax of “Top Of The Bill” featuring a 6-minute drum solo, and covers of rock and roll standards “Hound Dog” and “Long Tall Sally”. However, the encore, which lasts over 30 minutes in total, is an important point of this live performance. “Steamrock Fever”, where the S.E. continues to play even after the song ends, is endearing, but the wildness of “Dark Lady”, where Ulrich’s intense guitar explodes, is the best. It should be noted that ``Kojo no Tsuki'', which will be performed on SCORPIONS's next visit to Japan, will only feature the vocal part and chorus from the venue. If you compare it with the official live performance, you can see that the guitar instrument was added the next day. The studio take of "Robot Man" was just under 3 minutes long, but the live version of "Robot Man" was over 10 minutes long, and the excitement in the venue was amazing, with the excitement of the audience not only clapping but also blowing whistles. is also directly propagated. The eccentric "Hell Cat" also has an impressive chorus with Ulrich and Klaus singing the main songs. At the end, Ulrich's long solo explodes like a medley! From ``Kimigayo'' to ``The Stars and Stripes Forever,'' which was also influenced by Jimi Hendrix, a frenzied guitar blast erupts. Apparently there was also a handstand performance by Rudolf Schenker). It takes about 2 hours until the live ends with the call from the band "Ladies & Gentlemen, Scorpions", and this work is all about the listening station. This is a must-listen for all hard rock fans, as it is a detailed recording of their memorable first visit to Japan, which is still talked about as a legend, from a completely different angle than previously released!
