This is a professional shot video from the Tanglewood Festival, organized by Bill Graham on August 18, 1970. It is known as a famous live video of early Santana, but there are two types of video: one with existing time code and one without time code, which has much improved image quality and sound. Most of the performance parts are made using the improved image quality video, and the time code video supplements the intervals between songs. It has been remastered to 1080P HD quality and released on Blu-ray as the strongest video representing Santana. First, the live starts with the sound of a gong and the phrase of "Batuka". It is a funk rock that would make Eddie Hazel jealous, recorded on "Santana III", but in fact it is a live performance just before the second "Abraxas" was released. "Toussaint L'Ouverture" is also recorded on the third, but Santana had already played it at the Royal Albert Hall on April 18, 1970. It's amazing that Prince had already perfected this kind of performance in 1970, which he covered as "Santana Medley." They performed new songs from the second album, such as "Se a cabo," "Black Magic Woman / Gypsy Queen," "Oye como va," and "Incident at Neshabur." Original bassist David Brown created a great groove with his unique pose with the bass lowered (he was replaced by Tom Ratley in 1971 due to his drug habit). And Gregg Rolie performed original vocals while playing the organ. The groove rock of "Hope You're Feeling Better," written by Gregg, is so cool that it gives you goosebumps. And "Treat," led by Gregg's piano, may be surprising, but I can't help but think that Prince was also influenced by Gregg. Then, when Carlos starts playing, the protagonist changes to Carlos, and after playing for a while, it changes back to Gregg, and the main role changes again and again. If 13-year-old Prince had seen this live performance, he would have wanted to make such an instrumental piece on his own someday. Prince could still play the piano at this time, but he was just learning to play the guitar, but he must have improved quite a bit. Greg left the band and formed Journey with Neal Schon, who later joined. "Savor," which was also performed at Woodstock, is more funk than Latin, with drums, percussion, bass, guitar, and organ all in one, while "Jingo" is funky but Latin, and the two songs have a very clever flow. And the performance of "Soul Sacrifice," which is not at all inferior to Woodstock, is also amazing. The twin congas of Jose Areas and Mike Carabello are also amazing, but Michael Shrieve's drum solo, which was called electric at Woodstock, is even more electric here. Drum solos can be boring, but this one is on another level. And Carlos' thrilling guitar, it's clear that even an adult Prince would be jealous. The funk rock of "Gumbo" is solid, and the last song is the psychedelic rock of "Persuation", which is astounding in its persuasiveness. Greg's vocals and Carlos' assertive guitar make the audience forget to dance and stare. Miles Davis also appears, and Santana's side is full of the same spirit of "let's do it" as they did at Woodstock, making this a masterpiece live video.
