The Rolling Stones' legendary 1975 US tour, featuring Eric Clapton's surprise appearance at Madison Square Garden, is another popular recording eagerly awaiting reissue. Two mono audience recordings existed on this day, with "Source 2" being considered the best sounding. While several releases have been released, it was later discovered that this recording was Joe Maloney's, and the 2019 release "MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1975 1ST NIGHT: JOE MALONEY MASTER" was based on a version transferred from his master. This highly acclaimed recording, originally featuring Clapton's surprise appearance, was later reworked by GRAF ZEPPELIN to create the second edition of "MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1975 1ST NIGHT: JOE MALONEY MASTER" in 2022. Although two separate releases were realized, both have long since sold out due to overwhelming popularity. Therefore, this week we are re-releasing the first day of the LA Forum concert alongside the first day of MSG. While the original recording, thoroughly remastered by GRAF ZEPPELIN, was literally the definitive version, this reissue is a straightforward reissue of the 2022 second edition. It could essentially be called a third edition. While the transfer by Maloney Masters' Krw_co, released in 2019, was truly excellent, GRAF ZEPPELIN's work, which refined the recording to a more comfortable listening experience, was also highly praised by enthusiasts. While the mono recording does not achieve the same impactful sound image as the mirrored recording, this recording also virtually eliminates the surrounding noise, making it easy to listen to for beginners and enthusiasts alike. The original recording before the Krw_co transfer was easy to listen to, but it also had a dark, even lacking clarity. The Krw_co version eliminated those quirks, and with the meticulous tuning and thorough use of "Source 1" to fill in the cuts, it was perfectly packaged. This meant that there was no room for further tinkering for this re-release. Coincidentally, this week, the first show at the LA Forum from the same '75 tour is also being reissued, and it's interesting to see how different the atmospheres are even for the same tour. Perhaps the quality of the material available on the East Coast and the West Coast is different (lol). Even with the same high-energy performance, the atmosphere is clearly different between New York and LA. And, most importantly, both the MSG and LA releases feature the special encore performance of "Sympathy For The Devil," but the arrangements are completely different. This day is a prime example. MSG anticipated a guitarist joining in, and arranged for Keith to play bass, just as he did in the studio recording of the song. As a result, the performance sounded somewhat unsteady. Perhaps having learned his lesson, Keith returned to guitar in LA, resulting in a much tighter arrangement than MSG, as evidenced by the release of "L.A. FORUM 1975 1ST NIGHT: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES: COMPLETE EDITION." However, MSG continued to perform the arrangement with Keith's bass even on days when no guitarist joined, resulting in a rare, unusual live arrangement. And yet, Clapton appeared on the first day of MSG. The performance was already chaotic, as Keith's bass arrangement was unveiled for the first time, but his killer slow-hand phrasing around the five-minute mark is simply stunning, no matter how many times I listen to it. (Note: Remastering notes from the 2nd release) This is essentially a completely new mastering. The filler material was readjusted and then refilled, and the main source was also given some EQ correction to reduce the crispness. (Remaster notes from the original release) Pitch correction, phase correction, left and right bandwidth adjustment, sound cuts on one channel corrected as much as possible, missing sections filled in (some crossfading supported) Live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY, USA 22nd June 1975 PERFECT SOUND (UPGRADE) Disc 1 (71:19) 01.
