The Babylon Tour recording is a classic 1998 San Diego broadcast. This live performance was recorded and broadcast by Westwood One, a radio station known for broadcasting major concerts in the United States. Due to the nature of the stereo soundboard recording, various items were produced immediately after the broadcast. Among these, VGP's "STONED IN SAN DIEGO 1998" and Dandelion's "SAN DIEGO '98," which features a flashy equalization typical of the late '90s, are well-known titles. In particular, the former is the best version of this recording, reissued from the original aircheck recording and based on the broadcast disc. This release features the highest quality version based on the broadcast disc. The highest quality items already existed at the time of "STONED IN...," and above all, the original broadcast disc does not result in a dramatic change in sound quality. However, the un-equalized, straight recording from the radio show disc offers superb sound quality, and this will become a new standard item, allowing you to enjoy the Stones' stunning performance ahead of their Japan tour with a perfect stereo soundboard recording. The 1998 leg of the Babylon tour began with a rescheduling due to Mick's illness. Nevertheless, January kicked off with a series of highly anticipated shows at Madison Square Garden, which became a regular event, and a performance in Hawaii for the first time since 1973 (naturally, a large Japanese audience attended). These shows, which also served as further promotion for "BRIDGES TO BABYLON," featured previously unplayed album tracks and even rare performances from the past, which generated buzz. However, by the first show in February in San Diego, these efforts seemed to have come to a halt, and the band seemed to have returned to its usual business mode, focused on radio recordings. This leeway exploded with "Flip the Switch," one of the songs that became a signature of the Babylon tour. Compared to January, when Mick had just recovered from his illness, the performance was incredibly intense, and it seemed to sum up the content of the live performance that day. As is well known, this broadcast sound source was aired in a much less clear state with a strong echo (though it was certainly much better than New Orleans in 1994), but that didn't spoil the destructive power of this performance. As with this song, Keith also made a few fleeting mistakes, such as mistaking the chords on "Wanna Hold You." Still, it's interesting that it was broadcast without editing. Perhaps it was merely a sudden, overly energetic incident that didn't negatively impact the performance. Not only was it enveloped in the echo mentioned earlier, but narration was inserted at several points during the live performance, a phenomenon unique to Westwood One's live broadcasts, leading to a commercial break. As with previous items, all commercials were cut out this time, but the announcements that were inserted throughout remained intact. Moreover, a brief interview with Keith at the opening, which was cut from previous items, is included along with the background music "Low Down." These points may be considered heretical among the many Stones radio broadcast live shows, but this time it was recorded in the most faithful form to the broadcast, and on top of that it is a stereo soundboard recording with the highest sound quality.
