Rainer Brüninghaus, a pianist who primarily worked for ECM, demonstrated his talent as an original and unique sound sculptor as keyboardist for Eberhard Weber's Colors Band and later the Jan Garbarek Group. This album, compiled entirely from soundboard recordings taken from broadcast masters, features live recordings from the period surrounding his 1980 ECM album "Freigeweht." The recordings span a total of one hour and 50 minutes, spanning two performances at a German jazz festival in 1980 and a performance at Berlin Jazz in 1982. The lineup includes ECM regulars like Markus Stockhausen and John Christensen, as well as fellow ECM veterans Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn and John Christensen on drums, each contributing their own unique touch to the lyrical theme. Wheeler's meditative tone, in particular, vividly brings the themes of the songs to life. And of course, the album mainly features songs from the same album, with Brüninghaus's use of synthesizers and electronics giving it a truly ECM feel, and the timeless, wonderful performance is here in official quality.
