This work was recorded on “August 15, 1980 at Donington Park”. Yes, it is an audience recording that records the on-site rehearsal of “1st MONSTERS OF ROCK” held the day before. I couldn't help but write "audience recording", but that's just a matter of type. Naturally, there was no audience at the scene, and this recording was (probably) recorded by the staff with a microphone. Although it has been known for a long time, this work has been made into a CD from its best master. [First half of DISC 1: Sound check where the members gradually participate] This work is divided into two discs, and it is roughly like "DISC 1 = Sound check" and "DISC 2 = Rehearsal." However, it is not recorded in a strictly organized manner, and DISC 1 mainly consists of "sounds at times when the members are not yet together". And that freshness is the best. With a gigantic festival that will rewrite British rock history just around the corner, the venue is enveloped in a unique atmosphere that cannot be described as relaxing or tense, as the staff work steadily in making final preparations. The opening song “Soundcheck 1” also includes Donington’s famous aircraft explosion sound, and the mood is full of “Ah, Donnington is right!” From "Soundcheck 1" to "Soundcheck 5", the guitar, keyboard, and drums each check the sound as they wish. There are songs where the roadie is simply making sounds, and there are songs where the members themselves play their favorite phrases. I don't know when the members arrived, but they clearly arrived at the scene one by one, and at "Soundcheck 3" where Graham also appeared, the band was already playing "Weiss Heim". In "Soundcheck 4" and "Soundcheck 5" you can enjoy Koji's own test performances. [Last half of DISC 1 + DISC 2: Rehearsal with all members together] Such a sound check lasts about 27 minutes, but the atmosphere changes at once from the 6th track of DISC 1. Finally, the entire band gathers and begins rehearsal. Of course, there are a lot of rough parts compared to the live performance, but Graham's vocals and Cozy's drums are still strong, and each song is played well. The live performance is far more powerful than the average live album. Moreover, the sound is also amazing. The main press 2CD is also a historical masterpiece recording, but this is a rehearsal without an audience. It seems to be recording right next to the stage, and it's intensely on and close. It's good that the content is a little different from the actual show. Following "Love's No Friend", you can listen to Don and Richie's "Brandenburg Concerto", but on the actual stage it goes to "Since You Been Gone", but here they play "Weiss Heim" (Cozy also plays) I am fully participating). Richie and Don were also playing in the aforementioned “Soundcheck 3”, but they were played repeatedly during the rehearsal. I'm not sure if this was just for fun during rehearsals or if they were trying it out with the intention of doing it live, but it's a fun scene to read behind the scenes. When entering DISC 2, the band played a medley from “Over The Rainbow” to “Stargazer”. Graham in “Stargazer” has some parts where the lyrics and melody are ambiguous, but Richie makes you listen to a solo with a lot of spirit that you can’t believe is rehearsal. The performance gradually becomes more passionate, and reaches the same level of power as a real performance when "Lost In Hollywood" continues into "A Light In The Black" (on the other hand, Ritchie's solo has become quite inappropriate). (And that hugging feeling is also fun because it feels like rehearsal.) Also, you can listen to “Overture 1812” again at the sound check after the drum solo, but here only the tape is played. You can enjoy the atmosphere unique to rehearsals, which is impossible on the actual stage. Then, at the end, they rehearsed "Stargazer" (perhaps to confirm the band's cooperation, the performance started from the second half of the song). When you think Graham's song comes in, it turns into karaoke in the middle, and then just the keyboard and cozy, and it feels like each member is having fun playing. Speaking of "MOR's Stargazer", it is a legend among legends, but it is probably the biggest listening place even in rehearsals. There was a relaxed mood that was different from the gigantic spectacle of the festival, and a sense of nervousness as the UK's biggest rock festival was just around the corner. This is a "behind-the-scenes album" where you can enjoy rehearsals in a unique atmosphere that mixes both. There are many delicious scenes such as "Weiss Heim" that are only available at this time, and even if you ignore RAINBOW, there is plenty of real pleasure in looking into the "behind the scenes of historical festivals".
