Prince/Originals and Recordings 1990-1992

Originals is an album that compiles Prince's original demos and original versions of songs he wrote for other artists. Following the recent leak of the Diamonds and Love FLAC recording, this album compiles these recordings from 1990 to 1992, including versions by other artists. By interleaving these recordings, we've explored the vocal styles and arrangements of these songs. Some singers stay faithful to Prince's versions, while others add effects or adapt their own vocal styles. We also explore how female artists like Rosie Gaines, Jevetta Steele, Mavis Staples, and Patti LaBelle respond to Prince's instructions. We also explore how Prince wanted Tevin Campbell to sing. On tracks like "House in Order," Prince, Levi Seeser, and Michael create the backing tracks, leaving Prince alone and Steele on the chorus, performing with the band. There are also songs written for Sheila E. that have only been performed live, and songs like MC Flash that only exist in rehearsals. There are some surprising tracks, such as those used in Pepsi commercials (mainly Ray Charles, but also featuring other artists with gospel-style vocals). During Paisley Park Records' transitional period, he wrote many commissioned songs to help develop the record company. After changing his name, he founded NPG Records, and Prince continued to work independently.
