"Live at Pompeii", familiar to Floyd fans, is now available on a 3-disc DVD set, including the 1972 mono version, which has never been released on DVD before. "Live at Pompeii" premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival in the UK on September 2, 1972. An 80-minute version with an additional recording scene of "The Dark Side of the Moon" was released in theaters in 1974, and in the 1980s it was released on VHS and LaserDisc, making the 80-minute version familiar to Floyd fans. However, strangely enough, it was broadcast on television in Japan on March 17, 1973, earlier than any other country, as part of the "Young Music Show". At that time, it had not yet been officially distributed as a film, so naturally the film used at that time was the 60-minute version released in 1972 (the intro seems to have been cut due to broadcast time constraints). Furthermore, in Japan, it was first released in 1976 in Betamax format under the title "Pink Floyd's Fantasy," and the film used in the 1973 television broadcast was used as the master. Betamax video tape recorders were released in 1975, making this one of the earliest titles released to video in rock history. In 1983, the package design was changed and the footage was re-telecined, and thanks to this release, you can see the original film. The original 1972 version is characterized by the fact that the opening song is completely different from the familiar 1974 version, so you will definitely be shocked from the start of the video. The song that sounds like a prototype of "Speak To Me" that can be heard in the 1974 version was probably recorded during the production of the 1974 version. The opening title credit is written in French as "PINK FLOYD a POMPEI." There is no reverb on the vocals in "Echoes Part 1," which gives a very different impression from the stereo version. Furthermore, the ending part (from 13:19) is edited differently, and it is possible that the actual performance was longer and was edited, and the cut parts are different from the stereo version. For some reason, the order of "A Saucerful Of Secrets" and "One Of These Days" is reversed. "Set The Controls..." has a loud gong sound, and Roger's vocals in the first half of the song are mixed so that the overdub track is barely audible. Unfortunately, the current official DVD contains a cut version of the 80-minute version with the credits replaced as the 1972 original version, and since it is stereo rather than mono, it cannot be said to be the 1972 original version in the strict sense. Therefore, this time, the first disc, "Restored 1972 Original Cut," contains a restored version of the original 1972 release "Live at Pompeii" using the Betamax version sound source re-released in 1983, which has the best sound quality. Unlike the stereo version, it is optical sound from the film, but I think this is the best source at present. The 1983 Betamax version has some missing parts at the beginning of "Careful With~", the beginning of "Echoes, Part 2", and the ending of "One Of~", so we patched them using the 1977 VHS version and the broadcast audio from the "Young Music Show". The video is based on the remastered version of the DVD, and the credits that have been replaced are completely reproduced using multiple sources from the old release. As a bonus, we have included a rare trailer for the 1974 theatrical release. The second disc, "Restored 1974 Cut", contains a restored version of the 1974 theatrical release. The video is also based on the remastered version of the DVD, with the audio replaced with the LaserDisc version, and the credits and interview scenes are also sourced from the LaserDisc. Of course, the pitch has been corrected. The third disc, "Japanese Home Video Edition", is a complete uncut reproduction of the Betamax version released in 1983. Due to the recording time limit of the video cassette, the title credits of some songs were cut and original subtitles were added to the beginning of the songs, but the terrible typo of "ECHOES part 11" made me laugh. Bonus includes the intro and ending of the 1977 VHS release, which is credited with "Pink Floyd's Fantasy", as well as the very rare promotional video for the 1983 video release. A must-see and must-have 3-disc DVD set for all Floyd fans. Enjoy the new definitive version of the eternal masterpiece "Live at Pompeii"!
