Hakone Aphrodite 1971, a myth in the history of Japanese Western music, was realized in the summer 47 years ago. This luxurious 5-disc set is a summary of the best records. The mythical stage, which went beyond the realm of legend, has been left behind in various records and live albums. Last year, we introduced the summary set "APHRODITE 1971 (Sigma 194)", but that was simply a compilation of previously released works. This time, almost all of the masters/masterpieces have been reexamined and thoroughly reworked down to the smallest detail, making it the definitive version. To be honest, there are no surprising new sound sources, but this is a must-have set for those who missed the previous releases and those who want to have the ultimate specifications at hand. In order to explain the contents, let's start with some basic knowledge. I'm sure many of you are wondering about this now, but let's briefly organize the five existing audience recordings. ●RECORDER 1 (Mono recording: approx. 46 minutes) A mono recording of the phantom masterpiece analog "PEACE RECORD" that was not even sold in stores. This is a precious traditional recording that was the only one to record "Simbaline" until the appearance of RECORDER 5, which will be described later. ● RECORDER 2 (stereo recording: about 62 minutes) The most famous stereo recording, boasting the highest sound quality to date. Our shop is also familiar with "APHRODITE" and "APHRODITE 1971". ● RECORDER 3 (mono recording: about 31 minutes) A mono recording that has no peak point in both length and quality. Although valuable, it is now short for a belt and long for a sash. It can be heard on disc 2 of "APHRODITE", but it is not used in this work. ● RECORDER 4 (mono recording: about 55 minutes) A famous sound source unearthed by Reel to Reel. "Sun Hymn" appears for the first time in this sound source. "Echoes" was recorded completely for the first time in history. ● RECORDER 5 (mono recording: about 100 minutes) The shocking longest recording that let us hear the uncut "Mystery" for the first time. If you listen to "Sun Hymn" and "Simbaline" without cutting, you can even hear the closing greeting from a certain popular DJ. This original master cassette is immeasurably credited for completely elucidating the set list of this day, which was filled with mysteries. That's all for the basics of the sound source. With this in mind, let's take a closer look at each disc of this work. [Disc 1-2: Full show complete version based on RECORDER 5] First up is the extended full-length version based on the longest recording "RECORDER 5". Basically, this is the version that was also used on discs 1-2 of "APHRODITE 1971 REMASTER", which was very popular in early 2018. By using the longest "RECORDER 5" as a base, not only can you enjoy the entire performance with a sense of unity, but the missing opening scene and sound check are complemented by "RECORDER 2 and 4". It's a two-disc set that allows you to seamlessly experience the entire story of the myth that shines in Western music history. In addition, "RECORDER 5" itself has been brushed up. This original master was recorded in mono, but stereo tape was used. Therefore, although the music itself was the same on the left and right channels, the degree of deterioration was different on the left and right. Therefore, in this version, only the channels in better condition were narrowed down and returned to the original mono. Of course, since the music itself is recorded in mono, the on-site sound has been reproduced without missing a single sound. It is still the best in history that cannot be touched. In this work, the sound is left as it is, but the details such as the correction of the track division point position in the sun hymn have been refined to improve the completeness of the work. [Disc 3: Extended version of the highest peak sound RECORDER 2] The following disc 3 is also basically the "APHRODITE 1971 REMASTER" version. Based on "RECORDER 2", the only stereo audience and the highest peak quality of Hakone, the missing parts such as the inter-song intervals, about 30 seconds in the middle of "Eugene", and about 5 minutes at the end of "Echoes" are supplemented with "RECORDER 4・5". As you can see from the fact that it is recorded on one disc, it is a live album of about 65 minutes from the start of the show to "Echoes". This is not an incomplete version, and even if a complete version was produced with this concept, it would be the same as Disc 2 above. In other words, "Disc 1 → 2" is a full experience of a unified feeling, and "Disc 3 → 2" is a full show spelled out with the highest quality. [Disc 4: Full brush-up version of RECORDER 4] From here on, it is original to this work. First of all, Disc 4 is a fully revised disc of the famous Reel to Reel sound source "RECORDER 4". This recording is a bit complicated. The original is a mono reel recording (referred to as Reel A here), but later three pseudo-stereo masters (Reel B) were produced from it. There is no way to listen to "Reel A" in modern times, but this work reproduces "the sound that Reel A would have had" from "Reel B". This release uses a venerable master provided by the engineer who produced "Reel B," and has had the pseudo-stereo processing removed. Moreover, this time, the master has been fully brushed up. The highest peak so far was "HAKONE APHRODITE 1971 MASTER RECORDING: REMASTERED RESTORED," but not only have we corrected the slight skips caused by the delay processing, but we have also carried out a thorough and obsessive restoration. The biggest thing is the repair of the tape twist. It has deteriorated over the course of 47 years, but we carefully found and fixed it one by one, checking every minute and a few seconds. For example, in "Atom Heart Mother," the pitch was slightly off by 0.5% until just before the 7th minute, and the tape twist around 6:45 (the organ sound was twisted) was also corrected. In "Sun Anthem", around 1:40, in the second half of the 6-minute range, in "Echoes", around 5:40, 7:40, 17:10, 17:55, etc. ... I'll stop here. I thought I would list them for those who want to compare them with the previous releases, but I just can't list them all. You can check the accuracy of the restoration with the points above, but the true value is the smooth running feel. The natural flow of time that runs through the whole thing, the lustrous music is wonderful, and this is the latest version that revives the Hakone scene beyond time and space. Disc 5: The latest transfer of the ultra-rare LP "PEACE RECORD" + α] Finally, we will introduce the latest digital version of the ultra-rare mega-rare LP "PEACE RECORD". This "PEACE RECORD" is a legend in its existence, and according to the documents, it is an LP that the recorder himself produced for his own commemoration. It was never exhibited or sold in stores, and was a completely private record that was distributed only to close acquaintances and people involved at the time, and was not made for commercial use, so there is no title or jacket to begin with. It was only in a translucent bag, not even in a white sleeve, and just a sticker with the words "peace mark" and "RECORD" typed on it on a simple white label. It was a "phantom analog record" that even core enthusiasts had never even seen the label. It was also included in last year's 5-disc set, but that was just a reprint of a previously released CD. This time, the ultra-precious LP was re-digitized in the latest environment in 2018. Moreover, it is not just a re-transfer. Perhaps because "PEACE RECORD" was originally intended for personal enjoyment, there were some rough parts in the editing. About 5 minutes at the beginning of "Echoes" and about 12 minutes at the end were cut, and "Simbaline" also ends abruptly without about 20 seconds of the highlight scene at the end. It may have been to squeeze it into the LP, but it was a point that made me think "What?" when listening. In this work, such parts were supplemented with other recordings. However, the editing here is not aimed at a complete version of the show, but rather to allow the extremely valuable LP "PEACE RECORD" to be listened to naturally. The design of the phantom record was maximized, and a sense of "work" that can be enjoyed throughout was pursued. Of course, the same goes for the sound. Noise was removed to the very limit of the sound without any change (there was no noise that frequently occurred in the right channel at the beginning of "Eugene" in the previous release), while the original feel of the record was firmly kept. For the supplementary parts, instead of the highest peak "RECORDER 2", the "RECORDER 5" with a similar sound was used, and the mastering was performed to bring it as close as possible before connecting it. This is the definitive set that summarizes the "Hakone Myth". Core collectors may not find any surprising new discoveries, but this is a 5-disc set of elegance that carefully polishes each of the best recordings one by one and even gives it a sense of work. Atom Heart Mother 2. Echoes 3. Set The Controls For The Heart Of Sun Atom Heart Mother Corrected to raise the pitch by about 0.5% from the beginning to just before the 7th minute Also corrected as much as possible in multiple places, such as tape distortion at around 6:45 (the organ sound was distorted on the previous version) ECHOES Corrected distortions at around 5:40, 7:40, 17:10, and 17:55 (I didn't take notes, but I made quite a few corrections other than those mentioned above) Sun Hymn Corrected distortions at around 1:40 and just before the 7th minute Disc 5 (62:36) ★The original LP has been remastered after being newly re-recorded."e Record" (newly transferred) Recorder 1 1. Introduction 2. Green Is The Colour 3. Careful With That Axe, Eugene 4. Echoes ★Start - 5:22 / 9:13-21:07 filled in with Rec5 5. Atom Heart Mother 6. Cymbaline ★7:02-7:20 filled in with Rec5 In order to differentiate this from the previously released LP copy of APHRODITE 1971: PEACE RECORD (Import), the LP has been partially supplemented and remastered to create a CD. The LP is based on a digital master that was re-recorded specifically for this release, and scratch noise has been appropriately removed and pitch corrected before the missing tracks ECHOES and the cymba line have been supplemented. The supplementation has been kept to a minimum so as not to mar the image of this precious LP. The missing parts at the beginning of ECHOES and between the songs, and the end of the cymba line have been supplemented (3 places in total). The supplementary material was Recorder 5. There was a question of whether to use Recorder 2 (stereo Aud) or Recorder 5 for the supplementary material, but this time I used Recorder 5, which has a low-frequency range and a sound texture similar to that of the LP. If you listen to the smooth transitions in ECHOES, you will understand that this is a good work. I used the above two songs (3 places in total), but strictly speaking there are quite a few other gaps in the LP, but in order to emphasize the image of the LP, I only used the above two songs, which are a minimum of 3 places in total. The order of the songs is the same as the LP. I only supplemented the parts that I thought were better to add. *The buzzing noise (scratch removal marks) that frequently occurred in the right channel at the beginning of the previously released Eugene has been greatly eliminated this time. *Since a special edit was applied to this version, the previously released CD "APHRODITE 1971: PEACE RECORD" (Import) still has plenty of value as a "straight LP CD".
