The original "THE WALL Tour," a historic rock opera performance, has received an upgrade to its rehearsal soundboard! This work was recorded at Paramount Studios on February 1, 1980. It's a stereo soundboard recording capturing a tour rehearsal six days before the premiere. This recording is a legendary and highly sought-after recording associated with the original "THE WALL Tour." The ability to hear the live version of "THE WALL" on a stereo soundboard is invaluable, and the performance of stage director Roger Waters is also incredibly realistic. When it first appeared about 30 years ago, many cuts fit on a single CD, but since then, upgrades have been made. The complete tape, "L.A. Rehearsals Complete 1980," has become a beloved staple in our shop. This is a definitive edition, a pinnacle update worthy of its 45th anniversary. While this release uses the same complete soundboard, it delivers a 45th-anniversary edition with the highest quality. First of all, the source is different from previous releases. The foundation of this album is the latest transfer, released in 2025. Released by the world-renowned collector "Neonknights," this master is garnering attention for its unprecedented freshness. GRAF ZEPPELIN has meticulously remastered it. As anyone who has read this article knows, GRAF ZEPPELIN's mastering boasts obsessive precision while remaining unprocessed. While this may seem contradictory, the essence of their work lies in their goal: "reproducing and recreating the sound of the performance." Pitch and phase deviations are not tolerated, even by a thousandth of a second, and balance is corrected after frequency analysis. Various types of noise are also carefully controlled to the limit without distorting the performance sound. In other words, mastering is like the restoration of a painting or other work of art. This precision is also utilized in this album. Perhaps the most significant aspect of this work was the noise processing. Those who have experienced previous masters will be familiar with the hiss-ridden original sound, and previous releases often applied strong noise reduction to mask that noise, resulting in a swooshing, distorted performance. However, this release is super natural. The 45th anniversary "Neonknights" transfer was excellent, and the precision of the "GRAF ZEPPELIN" mastering was also outstanding. Low-frequency hum noise has been thoroughly removed, reviving the beauty of the on-site sound, even the instrument's resonance. This historic soundboard, enjoyable both musically and behind the scenes, is truly moving to hear the rehearsals brought back with such sound. While this is the complete version, it is merely the complete tape. Since some songs were not performed during the rehearsal, the story of THE WALL is not performed in its entirety, but instead, the highlight is the atmosphere of the on-site production creating the stage of the century. Although rehearsals vary in their level of completion, this work's unique moment, six days before the premiere, is a welcome revelation. While the songs and arrangements are already ingrained in the musicians, the stage direction and the sense of harmony with the props and stage equipment are still not fully developed. In other words, once the performance begins, each song is refined to the point where it can be appreciated as a musical work. In between, you can also experience the behind-the-scenes feel of Roger directing his staff. For example, after "One of My Turns," Roger, whose performance isn't going as planned, halts the full rehearsal. He explodes in frustration and issues harsh instructions. Another interesting track is "Hey You." During the performance, equipment malfunctions, causing all the instruments to fail simultaneously. Roger's live voice resonates as he sings the bridge part, "But it was only fantasy," and the performance stops, mumbling, "What on earth is going on?" Those who have performed onstage will understand this, but it's precisely because the project is already complete that the details become a focus of attention, and the dwindling time can only make you more frustrated. The unique atmosphere of rehearsals at the end of the show overflows from the speakers. Moreover, this album aims to be the rock opera of the century, "The Wall Tour." Even the pain of its birth is a historical drama. "The Wall" is a historic masterpiece that has shown many different facets, including the official album, film, live album, restaging, and demos. This release is the "tour rehearsal" version. Musically, it's a live album that allows you to enjoy live performances of "The Wall" numbers, and it also serves as a documentary album offering a glimpse behind the scenes of a historic performance. This 45th anniversary edition, "February 1, 1980, Paramount Studios," is a stereo soundboard recording that redefines the pinnacle of soundboard technology. This rehearsal album, released six days before the "The Wall Tour," was polished by GRAF ZEPPELIN to create a truly immersive soundboard. This is an essential album, not only for its precious live performance, but also for Roger Waters' stage direction as he strives to create a historic rock opera performance. This recording is a rehearsal recording from just before the Wall live performance, previously released in the 1990s on Behind the Wall (Stonhenge) and Brick By Brick (GDR). Stereo soundboard recording. The latest 2025 transfer by NEONKNIGHTS enhances the clarity. Pitch and phase corrections have been made, and low-frequency (hum) noise has been removed. Tracks have been appropriately separated to take into account non-performance sections between songs. Paramount Studios, Los Angeles, CA, USA 1st February 1980 STEREO SBD Disc 1 (51:25) 01.
