Before the release of his 2018 album "EGYPT STATION" and his world tour, Paul sporadically performed live activities to promote the album and warm up. On July 26th, they held a secret gig at their old club, Cavern Club. It was also reported in 2018 that the gig at Cavern, the first since 1999, was being filmed for public release. However, the subsequent performance in Japan and the triumphant return performance in the UK both showed tremendous excitement, and the topic of July was quickly forgotten. The fact that “LIVE FROM ABBEY ROAD” at Abbey Road Studio two days ago was broadcast in real time would have also spurred. That would be all well and good, but even after a year had passed since the recording, there was no sign that the video would be released, and it felt like it had finally been forgotten by fans all over the world. However, at the end of last year, more than two years after the gig, the 2018 Cavern Gig was finally distributed. The timing coincides with the release of the new album "McCARTNEY III", but there was no way they would play the songs from there (it was recorded two years ago after all), so it's strange that it was distributed now for some reason. I can't deny it. However, the content of the gig itself is very interesting. In 1999, they were playing aggressive rock'n'roll with lively musicians in the background, but this time the atmosphere is completely different as they are warming up with a long-time touring band. Also, since the first stage of the live performance in 2018 was also recorded, the performance in the beginning can be said to be stiff or tense, and the tempo is slower than in the later tours. On the contrary, it's refreshing. At the time, the Cavern in 2018 was only glimpsed through smartphone videos by the audience who was present, but once again, the relaxed performance looks fresh. Anyway, it was a bit tense at the beginning, and since the stage was suddenly narrower than on a normal tour, it was interesting to see Paul and the band members' cues and gestures for the performance in great detail. What's even more interesting is that due to the small stage, they couldn't bring in a regular grand piano, so Paul played everything from "My Valentine" to "Lady Madonna" on one keyboard. Thanks to this, you can see the rare sight of Paul singing facing the front even on “Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five”, which he usually played on the grand piano facing sideways from the audience seats. For the reasons mentioned above, you could feel the tension in the first half of the gig, but around ``In Spite Of All The Danger'', an acoustic Quarrymen number perfect for playing in a cavern, Paul and his friends started to loosen up, and the small venue started to loosen up. A great performance continues in the uniquely relaxed atmosphere. Maybe it wasn't released until now because of the tense atmosphere in the first half? Also, the relaxed performance throughout, such as "Hi, Hi, Hi", has an atmosphere reminiscent of the original Wings, which is refreshing. After all, the world has changed since the time the gig was recorded, and it can be said that it is a gig in a "crowded" situation that is impossible to realize now. Ironically, because it was released at the end of 2020, it was also a gig video that made you want to reconsider its value. Unfortunately, six songs were cut from that day's performance during the broadcast, and two songs from "EGYPT STATION" were leaked: "Come On To Me" and "Confidante". Still, I am thrilled that I was able to watch the 2018 Cavern Gig for a full 90 minutes, with perfect image quality and sound. Not only the special performance formation mentioned earlier, but also the special composition of the entire set list, which is unique to gigs. In any case, even in 2018, the live footage is completely different from the later performances in Japan and Grand Central Station. While I was staying at home, I was looking forward to the day when Paul would play such an intimate gig again. Live at The Cavern Club, Liverpool, UK 26th July 2018 PRO-SHOT (90:37) 1. Intro 2.
