Paul McCartney appeared on "MTV UNPLUGGED" in 1991, but it seems that it is surprisingly overlooked compared to Eric Clapton and Nirvana's times. Although the program itself was released as a live album ``OFFICIAL BOOTLEG'' after the broadcast, I think the biggest reason was that the important footage was not released as software. Since the program itself was broadcast on television, a copy landed in Japan shortly after it was broadcast in the United States, and it was widely circulated as a boot video. However, after all, it is foreign television footage. If you use the VHS that the other person copied and sent as the master, the version that has been dubbed twice will be sold at the shop, and at that stage the video will feel like it has lost its quality. The sad part about the boot video business back then. Still, we were grateful to see it. However, it was originally a TV video on MTV, so there was a desire for it to be broadcast on Japanese TV. The mania's wish finally came true in the summer of 1992, a year after the show aired in the US and UK. However, it came with the added bonus of a subtle hurdle in that the broadcast was not terrestrial. From here, please join me in sharing some of my memories. Some of the boot video stores at the time were able to perform ``recording'' on our behalf, and of course they were also contracted to record non-terrestrial broadcasts. Therefore, I asked him to record the Japanese broadcast of Paul's version of Unplugged, which was realized in the summer of 1992. Of course, bring in your S-VHS tape. As a result, I was able to obtain master-quality footage...For a while, I treated the footage I had obtained through proxy recording like a treasure, but now, after more than 20 years, those tapes have become moldy. . Even so, there were cases where the version was only broadcast in Japan, and in the 21st century, it was released on DVD-R. I was grateful that I had the chance to watch it, but the ``UNPLUGGED: JAPANESE BROADCAST'' that was suddenly released last month was also released on DVD-R, but it contained the 1992 Japan Broadcasting version in excellent image quality. It received high praise among enthusiasts. At the same time, this led to him receiving new VHS tapes from even more enthusiasts who said, ``The image quality is certainly great, but I think my tape has even better image quality.'' This is the new version provided by the enthusiast, and not only was it recorded using an S-VHS tape, the tape itself is in excellent condition, and at first glance it surpasses "UNPLUGGED: JAPANESE BROADCAST." All the staff were overwhelmed by the high quality. Anyway, the image quality is excellent, and this is definitely an official level. Certainly the current best version is the version included in the official 3-disc DVD “Paul McCartney Anthology”, but only 4 songs can be seen there. In addition, although the image quality was digitally corrected using technology from 10 years ago, the natural VHS feel of 1991, which was originally a video recording, is also attractive. Speaking of the Japanese broadcast version, the most important thing is the interview with Paul that was included between the performances. This was held in the summer of 1991 to promote ``OFFICIAL BOOTLEG'', and as I said when ``UNPLUGGED: JAPANESE BROADCAST'' was released, the content was really interesting. There is no other interview in which the world-famous Paul McCartney left such positive comments about bootlegs, such as ``I've done audience recording too'' and ``I can rather empathize with tape trading between fans.'' It was such an interesting interview that I think few people complained that the flow of the performance was disrupted, unlike the 1991 overseas broadcast version. However, this time, the same enthusiast also provided us with the best copy of the unedited version of the same program. Paul's unplugged appearance became a big topic among maniacs, more than the release of the album, and the full-length video was leaked within half a year from the broadcast. Back in the days when there was no internet, videos often leaked at an astonishing rate, but a similar phenomenon happened during Clapton's episode, and I can only assume that the management of the footage was quite lax. Thanks to this, it became clear that the actual recording was done in two parts, and that all the cover songs played at the beginning of the first part were rejected. What's even more surprising is that "We Can Work It Out," which featured redone scenes on the album and on the broadcast, was redone many more times, and the take that was played only once at the end of the recording was used. Finally, it was revealed that the members had changed instruments and even re-did "Ain't No Sunshine" sung by Hamish Stewart. As Paul emphasized in interviews and MCs in the program, it seems that he was enjoying even redoing it as something that can only be done because it is an acoustic gig rather than a stadium concert. Such unedited versions have been familiar to enthusiasts since those days, but with the advent of the DVD era, the image quality is not as good as it should be, or the audio has deteriorated to monaural, even at DVD-R level. It was on the market. After that, a best edited version mixed with the broadcast take appeared, but what is noteworthy is that the image quality is better than any previous version. Of course, since it is a leaked video, it is undeniable that it has a rough texture compared to the broadcast version. Still, the upper feel of this version will definitely surprise enthusiasts who have seen the full-length version released in the past. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that it is made from a single source. The shooting started from the venue before the members below Paul appeared, and it is also valuable as a document that it captures their appearance as they come and go each time they finish recording each episode. It is also valuable that you can completely see the band playing “Junk” with a mysterious look, which was overlapped with the ending roll in the broadcast version. Above all, Robbie McIntosh's outstanding play shows off his masterful craftsmanship, from cover songs such as the cut "The Fool" and "Midnight Special," to the acoustic guitar solo to the piano solo of "Ain't No Sunshine." Amazing. And it's unlikely that an official archive collection will ever see an unplugged release, at least not in the next five years (because the release pace is so slow). On the contrary, the Japanese broadcast version will never be released. Finally, the strongest pairing is the best version of the Japanese version and the complete version, which will make such enthusiasts happy!
