It was recorded after the end of The Paul McCartney World Tour, which took place from 1989 to 1990, with the tour's support members. The album emphasizes the band sound, with each song rehearsed and recorded in one take, with minimal overdubbing. "Mistress and Maid" and "The Lovers That Never Were" were songs written for the previous album, Flowers in the Dirt, and were co-written with Elvis Costello, although he did not participate in the recording of this album. "Come on People" was arranged and conducted by George Martin, and "Mistress and Maid" and "Golden Earth Girl" were arranged and conducted by Carl Davis (co-writer of the Liverpool Oratorio). The two songs "Biker Like an Icon" and "Peace in the Neighborhood" were taken up during rehearsals in November 1991 and were the first to be recorded on this album.
