After wrapping up the "Diary of a Madman" tour with his first Japan tour in July 1982, Ozzy Osbourne performed a special one-off gig in New York on September 26th and 27th to record a live album, a project he had been planning since Randy Rhoads was still in the band. The all-Black Sabbath performance there became Ozzy Osbourne's first official solo live album, "Speak of the Devil." While some say it was a dig at Black Sabbath's "Live Evil" live album released around the same time, this live album marked the first time Brad Osbourne's performance was featured on an official Ozzy Osbourne release. Following the album's release, the band planned a month-long European tour, including a four-date tour in the UK, in December 1982. This release features an audience recording of the first performance of their short UK tour, December 12th, at the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre (commonly known as the Birmingham NEC). This recording, released on Langley label under the title "GILLIS LIVES" about 10 years ago, has long been a hidden gem among enthusiasts, renowned for its "priceless live performance with an easy-to-listen-to sound image." This release has been thoroughly remastered, further refining the clarity, clarity, and harmonious sound for even better sound quality. This recording features a rare lineup only available for this time. Rudy Sarzo left the band after the production of "Speak of the Devil," replaced by Pete Way of UFO on bass. Furthermore, Brad also left the band at the end of 1982, making this performance extremely valuable. Brad's incredible playing begins with the opening tracks "Over the Mountain" and "Mr. Crowley," and his signature arm technique is featured to the fullest in "Crazy Train" and his solo. What fan wouldn't be thrilled to hear this performance with such directness and closeness, almost like a line source? Another highlight, typical of the "Speak of the Devil" tour, is the Sabbath number "Sweet Leaf," which follows Brad's guitar solo! This song, performed in Black Sabbath's hometown of Birmingham, delighted the fans in the venue, and the recording even captures the audience singing along with Ozzy. Tommy's drum solo is also included in this track, showcasing his dynamic playing with realistic tone. The show concludes with a trio of Sabbath numbers, featuring powerful renditions of "I Don't Know," "Believer," and "Flying High Again." The intro to "Iron Man" ignited a huge excitement in the venue, and the following "Children of the Grave" and encore "Paranoid" also delighted the audience. The intense reaction to the SABBATH numbers will have any enthusiast saying, "That's Birmingham!" After the four-date UK tour in 1982, Brad Gills left Ozzy Osbourne to start NIGHT RANGER with his old RUBICON buddies. In January 1983, Jake E. Lee, selected through an audition, joined Ozzy Osbourne as Randy's official replacement, ushering in a new era. This rare live recording from the final days of Brad Osbourne's time, delivered in arguably the finest sound quality available from a live audience recording of the time, makes this a must-listen for Ozzy Osbourne enthusiasts.
