Nick West was inspired to become a bassist in high school by Louis Johnson's bass on Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Something," and decided to pursue a career as a bassist. While Bootsy Collins was also her idol (Nick truly brought back the funk groove, Bootsy says, "I love everything about her playing"), Prince was her mentor. Intrigued by Nick's playing, Prince invited him to a late-night jam session at Paisley Park in 2012, where they performed songs like Sly's "Thank You." It's also reported that Prince and Nick recorded four songs together. It's safe to say that Prince was inspired by Nick in the same way as Sheila E. and Rosie Gaines. This recording captures her 2013 stage performance in the highest HD quality. The opening is a stunning studio version of Thumpahlenah's Do-Funk, featuring Larry Graham. The purple-themed stage setting clearly evokes Prince's image and influence. The sound they produced was rich with funk, but also rock guitar (guitarist Joey Ziegelbauer has Prince's love symbol tattooed on his face), and the Prince aesthetic was plentiful. They also performed "Purple Unicorn," a quintessential Prince song, sure to tickle any Prince fan's fancy. They also performed a funk medley, peppered with P-Funk riffs, and "Thank You," paying homage to Prince and Larry. Be sure to enjoy their versions. Carlene Graham's rendition of Toto's "Hold the Line" on backing vocals was also wonderful. The blackness of "Nothin to It (But Do It)," a rock track reminiscent of the Beatles' "Come Together" and Santana's "Hope Your Feeling Better," was also a nice touch, as was Nick's vocals on "Come Together." Before you knew it, the stage was bathed in psychedelic colors, and the visuals were a time-traveling experience, awe-inspiring. Then there's Prince's cover of Head, with its electro-infused, groovy bass, boasting a fresh yet equally funky sound. David Collum II's tight drumming, freaky keyboard work, and Lorenzo Campese's Matt Fink-esque vocals are a must-see. After the band members are introduced, a cutting Kiss intro plays, followed by a Kiss cover. The guitar riffs, so different from Prince's, are so crazy you'll be dancing like crazy. Even Prince would compliment Nick on this one, saying it's too much.
