Michael began writing songs for a new album in earnest in January 1985. In addition to recording prototype songs such as "Hot Fever" and "Al Capone," tapes of songs that were written to a certain extent but were not yet completed were piled up in a storage warehouse. No one knew what kind of album it would be. The work continued into 1986. First up was "Don't Be Messin' 'Round." Michael had recorded this song many times throughout his life and it seemed to be a favorite of his. The first recording was done in the fall of 1981 during the sessions for "Thriller" with engineer Brent Averill. However, there was a lot of new material at the time, so he decided to save it for the next album. In 1986, he started working on "Don't Be Messin' 'Round" again with longtime collaborators Matt Forger and Bill Bottrell at the newly renovated Havenhurst Recording Studio, nicknamed the Laboratory. "Michael works on songs when he wants to. If he doesn't feel it's ready or doesn't fit the album or project, he puts it in the vault and brings it out again when the time is right." Matt Forger says that the original demo was about eight minutes long, so Michael had to cut it down to the current length of four minutes and 20 seconds, almost half the length. "The long version of 'Don't Be Messin' 'Round' is very interesting because there are different things happening in different parts. It's not something you can sit and listen to for eight minutes and feel like it's long. There's something going on there that makes it feel cool, and it's just the rhythm that makes you happy." Matt Forger: "Michael likes to make songs long, to keep the groove going, so he can dance. He loves that. If the song makes him dance, then he's got control over the groove." Matt Forger Michael continued working on the song from February 19th to October 25th, 1986 at both Hayvenhurst and Westlake Recording Studios. "MJ came in at Westlake and said he wanted to do this song again. He sat down at the piano and played something, but he seemed to lose interest. We ended up doing something else." Bill Bottrell Quincy Jones didn't like it, so it was shelved from "Bad," but the original "Don't Be Messin' 'Round" is included. It weaves together Latin, jazz, bossa nova, and pop to create a light sound with an uplifting hook. Michael actually plays the piano (Forger says he's better than you know). While it has a Bubbles-like "ho-ho!" voice and is innovative, there are parts that clearly have no lyrics, so he hums to cover it up, and Michael shouts "Bridge!" before the bridge, but in fact, the melody is there after that, but no lyrics appear. Although it is unfinished, Forger himself said that the version released was the final version from the '86 "Bad" sessions, and that no new parts were added after that, nor in any recordings from '87 onwards. On the other hand, it is said that it is a new mix by Matt Forger, combining elements recorded on several different multi-track tapes in an attempt to reproduce the "Bad" era version as much as possible. Although it is a version made during the "Bad" era, it seems to have the same backing as the "Thriller" snippet mentioned above. And in fact, there is another real demo called redux that was leaked by Korg Nex, not a fake, and it is also included. This one seems even more unfinished. The phrases seem to be in the planning stages, or as if no ideas have been forthcoming. It is unclear whether this is from the "Thriller" period, or the early "Bad" period, or whether Forger used this demo, but it is worth researching. And Forger said that the original demo was about 8 minutes long, and to get closer to that, a 6-minute extended long version was included as a fan-made version. And XscapeR's DJ remix. It's a good mix that makes the most of the song without much work. "Bad Girl" is said to be Michael's in a testimony in Mexico in November 1993. Bill Bottrell produced it during the Hayvenhurst sessions, and Bottrell says he recorded "Bad Girl" with Michael on 28 February 1986, which was the only time the song was actually produced. "It's in the diary. I don't remember how the song developed. It was only a day or two, and we didn't flesh it out. Maybe there was some vocal in there, but I'm not sure." Bill Bottrell: "On 28 February 1986, we worked all day and late into the night recording "Bad Girl," including the vocals. I don't remember how complete it was. I never worked on the song again." Bill Bottrell: "I didn't work on it after that day, so I don't remember what it sounded like. We had tight security, so we didn't take the tapes home." Bill Bottrell This recording is not from the February 28, 1986 recording. It is a song called "Bad Girl" released in 2009 by a male vocalist named Massari, and it is sung by Michael using AI. Massari's "Bad Girl" has nothing to do with Michael. In fact, Massari's vocals are quite similar to Michael's, so it is believed that he was heavily influenced by Michael. There is a recording of Michael covering the song using AI, and we created a fictitious story that Michael provided the song in secret, and we included it. "Free" was written by Michael himself, co-produced with Bill Bottrell, and recorded at Havenhurst on March 19, 1986. It was written on this day alone and is thought to have been (almost) completed. However, it was not included in "Bad". The existence of "Free" was also mentioned in the testimony given in Mexico in 1993. First of all, the melody is beautiful and elegant beyond perfection. "You're the very woman I love, no one knows how I feel, tell me what you mean to me, I told you right now, I'll give you all the love you've got, you saved me." The chorus rhymes great too. "Free, like the wind, to fly like a sparrow, my hair blowing in the wind, I can go anywhere in my own time, I'm mine." At the end, Michael laughs and says, "Randy, you're a fool." I wonder if Randy Jackson happened to be visiting at this time. Includes the original version of "Free," an instrumental cut from the song, an a cappella, and a nice 80s remix. "Fly Away" was recorded during the "Bad" sessions at Hayvenhurst from April 20 to July 14, 1986, and produced by Bill Bottrell. But it was shelved. More than a decade later, the song was given to his sister Rebbie, who included it on her album Yours Faithfully. In Rebbie's version, Michael sang backing vocals, some of which were not included in Michael's original version. "Fly Away" is a song with a beautiful melody that shows the true essence of Michael the composer. "Our love is on the move, you know I'll never leave, so tell me goodbye to our love. It's the right time, so let's fly away together, I'll give you my heart, 'cause we're so close, so we don't need it. Don't let me go, let me stay, love now, love is here." Was it a love for Diana Ross? Or Tatum O'Neal? Let's fly away together, not with anyone else. This time, there are the original version, instrumental version, a cappella version, an 80's style remix, a reworked version, and an extended version. Among them, Juiceppe's Remix is an interesting mid-tempo dance tune. 1.Don't Be Messin' 'Round (Snippet) 0:07 2.Don't Be Messin' 'Round 4:19 3.Don't Be Messin' 'Round (Instrumental) 4:18 4.Don't Be Messin' 'Round (Korg Redux) 4:23 5.Don't Be Messin' 'Round (Extended Long Version) 6:06 6.Don't Be Messin' 'Round (XscapeR Mix) 4:16 7.Massari - Bad Girl (AI Cover Version) 3:09 8.Free 4:25 9.Free (Instrumental) 4:28 10.Free (Acapella) 4:17 11.Free (80's Mix) 4:42 12.Fly Away 3:27 13.Fly (Instrumental) 3:30 14.Fly Away (Acapella) 3:23 15.Fly Away (80's Mix) 3:36 16.Fly Away (Reworked Edition) 4:50 17.Fly Away (Extended Version By The Shields Biggest Fan King) 4:08 18.Fly Away (Extended 8D Mix) 5:44 19.Fly Away (Juiceppe's Remix) 6:10
