Quincy Jones (who co-produced the song with Michael) invited Saida to his house for a meeting with other songwriters and asked them to work together on songs for his next album. Saida recalls that Quincy said, "I just want a hit song. That's all." She took the request to her songwriting partner Glenn, who joined as a keyboardist. Glenn was inspired by a song Saida had been singing for about a year, with lyrics about a man looking in the mirror. The two spent a week perfecting the demo, and Saida recorded a guide vocal. She called Quincy right away and told him she didn't need to wait until Monday. With that, Quincy immediately invited her over to his house to get the tape. Four hours later, Quincy called Saida and told her the song was in. Saida and Glenn wrote a slightly longer middle eight (which leads into the chorus) and revised some of the lyrics at Michael's request. This album includes a demo of "Man In The Mirror," a simple song with keyboards as the backing, sung by Saida, and a fan-made remix by Reborn Stripped, with the backing sound stripped down to a simpler version, with Michael as the main vocalist and Saida singing more.
