She started composing music at the age of 7, and after winning a series of contests and other events, she gained attention. While still in high school, she signed a songwriter contract with a music publisher in Nashville. After graduating, she turned down a scholarship to enter Berklee College of Music, and began traveling to Los Angeles in her teens. She has written many songs. Her debut single "All About That Bass" in 2014 topped the US charts for eight consecutive weeks, and also reached number one in Europe and Australia, making her popular in Japan as a "chubby and cute diva."
