This superbly high-quality pairing features two masterful performances by Marcus Gilmore, Kenny Garrett, Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci, and Obed Calvaire, masters of authentic jazz who carry on the legacy of such greats as Roy Haynes and Wayne Shorter, that wowed audiences at the 2025 Newport Jazz Festival! Marcus Gilmore, grandson of legendary drummer Roy Haynes, who led the jazz scene for over half a century, has now surpassed Roy in skill and has had a major influence on modern jazz drummers in recent years. Accompanying him on this first-ever performance in tribute to Roy Haynes is Kenny Garrett, who supported Miles Davis in his final years and later pursued a solo career. He was described by The New York Times as "one of the most acclaimed alto saxophonists in jazz, second only to Charlie Parker." Danilo Perez and John Patitucci, who performed with the legendary Wayne Shorter for over 20 years and continue to pursue jazz improvisation in the spirit of Shorter, are also part of the band. This two-disc set combines two highlights from this year's (2025) Newport Jazz Festival, featuring the August 2, 2025, Newport Jazz Festival performance, which made global headlines, in its entirety, meticulously mastered by the label, in superb audio quality. The other, held at the same venue on the same day, features a culmination of a full-fledged piano jazz trio: Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci, and Chris Potter's hyper-jazz trio, the Circuits Trio, with Obed Calvaire, the legendary drummer who replaced Marcus Gilmore in 2020. This set, also meticulously mastered by the label, also features the label's signature high-quality audio. Marcus Gilmore is now the first choice for many renowned musicians. Marcus's steady, rhythm-box-like drumming, enhanced by his virtuoso technique, creates a never-before-heard, astonishing sound. Kenny, who captivated fans with his stunning playing during his Japan tour last year, continues to explore new forms of expression, carrying on the traditions of jazz while connecting it to the future. Here, he returns to his roots and showcases the true essence of his straightforward jazz alto. Furthermore, Danilo Pérez and John Patitucci, who reached new heights as part of Wayne Shorter's supreme quartet, offer a truly masterful performance. The album features Pérez, a Panamanian pianist hailed as a hero, Patitucci, a leader in the jazz bass world, and Obed Calvaire, a drummer who has garnered critical acclaim in recent years. Obed, a 1982 Miami, Florida-born drummer, is one of the most influential drummers since the acclaimed Eric Harland. He joined Steve Turre's group as a student and quickly rose to fame as a member of David Kikoski's trio, known for his work with Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, and Mike Stern. He displayed power and technique on a par with Dennis Chambers in his prime, and his astonishing responsiveness to other instruments. This trio's performances are truly exceptional, filled with a creative and original sensibility that could be described as the pinnacle of modern piano trio performances. This highly anticipated live performance from the 2025 Newport Jazz Festival, featuring these two masters who have quickly become renowned as the leading figures in the contemporary jazz scene, is a must-have, fully recorded in superb quality sound!
