After working as a pianist for Charles Mingus and others from the early 50s, he became Billie Holiday's accompanist in 1957, and the title track from "Left Alone," produced in 1960 as a tribute to Billie, became a standard number. After moving to Europe in the mid-60s, he performed mainly in Europe and Japan, and was particularly popular in Japan as he later married a Japanese wife and was a Japanophile, leaving behind albums produced in Japan. This is a complete recording of the 78-minute live performance of this famous pianist's quintet at the annual "Middelheim Jazz Festival" held annually in Antwerp, Belgium on August 15, 1977, in master quality stereo sandboard audio. First of all, this was a live performance at the peak of his career, when he passed away in 2002 at the age of 77. The band members were Manfred Schoof, a trumpeter from Germany who represents Europe, and Steve Lacy, a soprano from New York, who was his friend, and they performed a long performance. And the Europeanized and sophisticated style is sure to please Japanese people. 1. The Seagulls Of Kristiansund (32:14) 2. Hooray For Herbie (20:29) 3. Snake Out (15:53) 4.
