Upon the release of "BOSTON 1970," the September 19th Madison Square Garden performance was cited as one of the highlights of the August-September 1970 US tour. A compilation of the two shows was released in 2017 as "MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1970." After this sold out, Graf Zeppelin polished up the album in 2020 to produce "MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1970 REVISITED." While this is one of the early masterpieces in the "REVISITED" series, now thoroughly restored by Graf Zeppelin, it's also a long-sold-out recording. This September 1970 performance, rivaling Blueberry Hill, was a highlight of the tour, and a stable supply of copies is essential. This historic day, marking Zeppelin's first MSG performance, is even more so. As expected, GRAF ZEPPELIN handled the restoration, and the work on the 2017 to 2020 editions, including the mono conversion, was thorough. They could have simply reissued the latter. However, five years have passed since the original release, and they undertook further revisions for this reissue. Again, the 2020 edition was already highly polished. One area that fell short at the time was the Afternoon Show's "Thank You." The recording of this song had wow-flashing distortion, and the interlude was so distorted that it seemed as if Jimmy was playing a Strat with an arm for this particular performance. GRAF ZEPPELIN has made bold corrections. While it's not completely fixed, it's still significantly more stable than the 2020 edition. While not a major change, the hum found in quiet sections, such as the beginning of "Since I've Been Loving You," has been removed. While the combination of three different sound sources gives the Afternoon album a rough overall impression, the main source, centered around Jimmy's guitar, creates a close sound image and is surprisingly easy to listen to. The Evening Show, discovered in the 21st century and causing a huge sensation, was flooded with items that added equalization to varying degrees when it was first released, but the 2017 release achieved a natural release that eliminated all of that. Furthermore, the 2020 release was finished in a state worthy of being considered the definitive edition. Furthermore, like the Afternoon release, the hum has been removed, and more importantly, the overall volume and frequency range have been revised, resulting in a cleaner, more listenable sound. While the distortion of the Evening album naturally increases as the live performance progresses, this restoration will reduce the muddiness and provide a clearer, more enjoyable listening experience, especially in the final track, "Out On The Tiles." With their growing popularity, ZEP had already moved on from their usual two-show-a-day live act, but this was the final day of the tour and their first appearance at MSG, so they performed twice in one day for the first time in a long time. While the number of songs on Afternoon was somewhat reduced toward the evening, the explosive energy was still unique to September 1970, as heard at Blueberry Hill. Perhaps Jimi Hendrix's untimely death the day before also contributed to the intense energy of the performance. It was even mentioned in the MC. Even after that first show, Plant's voice remained unfazed as he shouted, a truly 1970-esque performance. And the finale of the show, as if giving it his all, was a spectacular sight. Just as they had done at Blueberry Hill, they started with "Some Other Guy," but then the unexpected "The Train Kept A Rollin'" was performed, a performance that remains shocking to this day. This September 1970 MSG masterpiece, rivaling Blueberry Hill, also features the second-ever live take of "Out On The Tiles," a track from the soon-to-be-released new album, and a smashing encore featuring a rock 'n' roll medley, the first since the Bass Festival. Graf Zeppelin has now completed this 2025 edition, worthy of being called the final version! The hum noise in "Afternoon" has been pinpointed and the wow-flash that was noticeable in "Thank You" has been slightly corrected. The hum noise has been removed, and the overall volume and frequency range have been revised and corrected, resulting in a clearer, crisper sound than the previous edition. The hum between songs and the volume contrast are similar to "Ou On The Tiles," making it easy to distinguish from the previous release.
