Although it was released online in August, many enthusiasts may have thought, "Huh? Why isn't it being released?" Barry Goldstein recorded Led Zeppelin at the LA Forum on May 31, 1973. Yes, it was everyone's favorite John Bonham's birthday show. Of the audience recordings from that day still available, this one is highly valued as the only one containing the finale, "Communication Breakdown." Prior to that, two different recordings were available on this day. First, there was "Source 1," which was included on the TMOQ LP, the most famous and best-sounding. While the cover art of the classic LP "BONZO'S BIRTHDAY PARTY"—with its illustration of a pig jumping out of a cake—conveys the brilliance of the performance, the lack of the first half of the live performance is a bit of a downside. "Source 2" first appeared on the lame LP "MORE FROM BONZO'S BIRTHDAY PARTY," with its uninspiringly designed cover. Its longest recording of the entire live performance led to its becoming a mainstream CD release in the 1990s, starting with the Mud Dogs release. Even the soundboard was later unearthed, but too many cuts were missing, particularly the scene celebrating Bonzo's birthday. As a result, the value of each audio disc remained intact, a rare occurrence in the SBD-rich year of 1973. Meanwhile, "Source 3," recorded by Goldstein, was used only as a filler for "Communication Breakdown" for the aforementioned reasons, and until now, its full scope has been unknown. While its capture of the song was certainly highly valuable, it was undeniably inferior in terms of sound quality to the other two sources. However, the release of Goldstein's master recording finally revealed that the version used as a filler on previous releases of this song was significantly out of sync. Previous releases of "Communication..." may have left the impression of a "rough and thin sound," but the sound quality of this master has improved dramatically. It's amazing how that roughness has been completely eliminated, resulting in a truly natural, deep, and wonderful sound. Goldstein accidentally switched cassettes just as Plant began singing "Happy Birthday" to Bonzo. When the TMOQ source was patched into the complete version for this release, the difference in sound quality was barely perceptible. The improvement in sound quality from the master is clearly evident, and the quality has even surpassed that of "Source 2." While the TMOQ source remains the best Aud recording of the day, this discovery has revealed the shocking fact that the Goldstein source possesses a quality approaching it. Furthermore, there are many areas where the basic cuts are not embedded in the performance, further amazed by the superb recording quality. Therefore, the cuts were edited with heavy use of "Source 2," proving that the Goldstein recording, which had previously only served as a filler for "Communication Breakdown," has been reversed. The upbeat feel of this recording is so overwhelming that it's no exaggeration to say it has been elevated to the most representative AUD of Bonzo's Birthday, replacing the TMOQ source, which had the fatal problem of missing the first half of the live performance. And the splendor of this day, which has been talked about so much, is hard to believe it was a live performance performed while Jimmy was injured. In fact, perhaps it was his injury that allowed him to concentrate so much on the performance? The improved sound quality of this recording reaffirms the fact that this is one of the greatest performances produced in the US in the first half of 1973. The overwhelming naturalness and ease of listening are astounding. This third sound source capturing Bonzo's birthday is a shocking upgrade... Sorry for the wait!
