More than just a jazz vocalist, Karin Krogh, a great Norwegian artist, has recorded rare performances in 1967, 1969, 1972, and 1988 in her native Norway with a distinguished cast of collaborators, all recorded over an hour and a half on a high-quality soundboard, all carefully mastered by the label! The first is from 1967, when Karin sings standard numbers such as "Old Folks," "Sunny," and "Caravan" with the young Jan Garbarek on sax, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass, and Jon Christensen on drums, backed by the Kenny Drew Quartet on piano. Her voice is fresh, but her interpretation of the songs is already unique, which makes it feel extraordinary. Compared to the very ordinary Garbarek, Pedersen's bass is a must-listen, as it leads the whole album with its technical and overwhelming performance! The 1969 live performance features a duo of just Carlin and bassist Red Mitchell, performing "Alone Together," "God Bless the Child," and four other songs. Mitchell, an American who was said to be the best technician at the time but was in his prime after moving to Stockholm in 1968, plays a fantastic bass that moves around freely like a kaleidoscope. Meanwhile, Carlin, who has grown significantly since two years ago, deals unashamedly with Mitchell on an equal footing, and you can listen to some tense and interesting performances, including some scenes reminiscent of his later free vocalization! In the 1970s, Carlin also moved to the electric route in line with the trends of the world. The 1972 live performance, which is symbolic of that era, begins with an introduction in which Carlin has gone beyond being a mere vocalist, and instead takes an experimental, progressive approach, adding echo to her voice and using a variety of scatting. The song then takes a complete turn, and with Roy Helvin's Rhodes electric piano resounding, the song develops into a superb number in which Carlin's singing is carried over to a feel-good groovy development that will delight fans of rare groove/European groove! Another performance from 1972 with different members is also included, this time with a different Garbarek from '67, Christensen, the strongest Nordic drummer with outstanding stability as always, and Arild Andersen, a nine-member band centered around Garbarek, Christensen, and Terje Rypdal, who is one of the Nordic Big 4, playing true progressive music that greedily incorporates elements of rock, free (spiritual) and classical (contemporary music) like Electric Miles and Weather Report at the time, and with the addition of Karlin's vocalization, which has become part of the instrument, a fantastic world that seems like it is not of this world spreads out over the course of 20 minutes, making this the most interesting performance in this two-disc set! ECM fans and progressive (Euro) rock fans are also not allowed to miss it! Finally, enjoy the famous live performance in 1988, where Karin performs four ephemeral but beautiful songs, including Kurt Weill's "September Song" and "Speak Low," backed by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. The deliciousness of her mature singing and her straightforward expression of emotion will touch your heart! This is the definitive edition that can be enjoyed from every angle, from the early days to the transitional period and mature period of Karin Krogh (her partner both publicly and privately is John Surman), a rare talent who goes beyond being a mere vocalist!
