"December 8, 1980". This is a heavy and deep history album that recalls that day engraved in music history. That said, what is included here is neither a live recording nor a well-crafted documentary program. This is a special feature on "Double Fantasy" that was broadcast on the popular Japanese radio program "Sound Street" about two weeks before John Lennon was shot. The broadcast date was "November 20, 1980", 18 days before John died. Although the tape has deteriorated for about the first 30 seconds, you can immediately listen to the broadcast as it was at the time. The content is a familiar famous DJ introducing "Double Fantasy", which had just been released three days earlier. John has become synonymous with 20th century music now, but of course at this point he could not have even imagined the tragedy that awaited him, and the program proceeded as if it were a normal album release. The song is played while the translation of the intense lyrics is read aloud. The biggest point is the perspective that can only be achieved in real time. He criticized Bob Dylan's criticism that "you should become a legend by staying silent like John," and said of his five-year silence, "Becoming a living legend without doing anything is nothing but defeat," and "We have a responsibility to send a message to the younger generation who don't know THE BEATLES." He also commented on the world-famous masterpiece "Double Fantasy," saying, "I wish (John's and Yoko's songs) had been on one side each," and even though he said he respected Yoko Ono, he couldn't help but let out a bitter smile if he had just heard "Beloved Yoko" for the first time. Yes, the John spoken of here is not a historical legend, but a "living" legend. It is a world where we take it for granted that we will continue to live in the same era and have a future. The DJ's comments in the second half of the program may symbolize the view of John Lennon at the time. "The core of an artist, the cracks in his heart, the demons (as expressions) remain constant no matter how rich he is or how his environment changes. In that sense, John Lennon has always been someone I've been interested in, and he's one of the very few artists who is always by our side and somehow lets us share his wounds." The program ends with an introduction of "Starting Over" as a "message from John to you all," but the last part of this work also includes the radio news that reported the first news of "John's shooting." "John Lennon, one of the members of The Beatles, was shot and killed by a young man with a gun in front of his New York home on the night of the 8th, this afternoon Japan time. As he was about to enter his apartment with his wife Yoko Ono, he was suddenly shot in the chest and other places." Following a song of warm love and hope for the future, the news calmly tells of his death. The announcer's tone, which is completely emotionless, is even more frightening, leaving no room for sentimentality such as "preciousness" or "sadness at the time". It's a wall-like sense of reality that freezes even us, who are supposed to be far away in time and space. John Lennon, who became a historical great. The real-time love that ran alongside him in life, and the reality that hits him without asking for permission. All of this really happened 34 years ago, and is a fact that actually existed. Here is a reality that you can instantly understand the shock of that time and empathize with without having to "think about it". This is a shocking album for all rock lovers.
