Sometime in New York City, released in 1972 under the name of John Lennon & Yoko Ono/The Plastic Ono Band, is a deeply political album, reflecting the band's move from the UK to New York City in September 1971 and their growing involvement in counterculture political movements. The album is dominated by songs addressing political and social issues, from sexism and racism to prison riots, incarceration, and colonialism. Perhaps as a result, the album was initially criticized for its political content, panned by fans and critics, and branded a commercial failure. However, the melodic sense and quality of each track have since been reevaluated. The original album was released as a two-disc set, combining a studio album with live jams. However, the live performance was removed from the CD reissue, and the box set was left out of the box set, marking a turbulent and infamous release. "Sometime in New York City: Alternate Masters" features alternate versions of every studio album, as well as recordings not previously available on official releases, making it a comprehensive collection of rare recordings. Disc 1, the "Alternate Album," features all album tracks in uniquely selected remixes, demos, and alternate versions. Disc 2, the "Studio Sessions," features outtakes of "A Woman Is a Slave of the World," "New York City," and "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)." Disc 3 features a collection of primarily acoustic home demos and studio rehearsals. These simple and pure demos are valuable sources that directly convey John's songwriting process, and the selection includes some currently difficult-to-obtain recordings. Also included are recordings that have previously been included in fragments on the Lost Lennon Tapes and various compilations, making this 2025 Special Collector's Edition a noteworthy compilation of related recordings from the album "Sometime in New York City," including previously unreleased material.
