Jake E. Lee's smash-hit collection of rare tracks is back with an expanded collection! This album features 18 stereo soundboard recordings. This definitive, official release offers a panoramic view of his career beyond Ozzy Osbourne in ultra-high quality. It includes not only his work with Ray Gillan on BADLANDS, but also his early days with RATT and ROUGH CUTT, as well as numerous other elusive projects. Jake is best known as the "former Ozzy Osbourne guitar genius," but his career is actually quite diverse. He traversed the competitive LA metal scene and participated in a variety of projects. While most of his bands and projects never resulted in official albums, he left his mark on individual tracks. This album brings together these incredibly rare tracks. This soundboard album features 18 tracks from six bands and projects, all in superb quality. The best way to experience these rare tracks is to introduce them one by one. Let's get started. Before Ozzy: 1981's Mickey Ratt (1 track) First up is Stephen Pearcy's band, RATT. Jake was a member when they were still called "Mickey Ratt." At the time, RATT lacked any of their original members except Stephen. Other members included Bob Delellis on side guitar and Matt Thrall and Dave Alford, who would go on to become members of the early Rough Cutt. Jake also used his real name, "Williams." While they didn't record any official material, Stephen later released a collection of their early rare tracks, "The Garage Tape Days 78-81," which also included "Top Secret." While technically classified as a demo, for a fledgling band, each demo was a serious test of their future. This track, both in quality and sound, is official-grade, allowing you to enjoy the collaboration of a young Jake and Stephen with the same quality as their debut releases. Before Ozzy Osbourne: ROUGH CUTT (1981-1982) Despite leaving behind two impressive demos, Jake and drummer Dave Alford left RATT in 1981. They joined forces with renowned singer Paul Shortino to form ROUGH CUTT. While this group never produced an album, Jake finally made his record debut. That memorable debut album was the 1983 LA metal compilation "LA'S HOTTEST UNSIGNED ROCK BANDS," in which he contributed two tracks as ROUGH CUTT: "A Little Kindness" and "Used & Abused." This compilation is extremely rare, having never been officially released on CD, and this release digitizes the original in its best condition. Its contents are truly a treasure. While Mickey Ratt was also fantastic, Rough Cutt was a fully professionally produced album, produced by none other than Ronnie James Dio himself (with keyboards also handled by Claude Schnell, who would later join DIO). Not only is the sound exceptional, but the songs themselves are superb, and the vocal and guitar performances are worthy of being called masterpieces. It easily dispels the prejudice that often clings to rare tracks as "just a rare rarity." It's a cultural loss that such masterpieces and tracks remain unavailable on official CDs. This is truly a treasure. Post-Ozzy: BADLANDS (1988-1992) After Rough Cutt, Jake made his major label debut with Ozzy Osbourne. He shaped the history of heavy metal with "Howl at the Moon" and "Crime and Punishment." If you've read this article, you're probably well aware of his achievements, so I won't go into detail here. This album moves on to his later band, the legendary BADLANDS. 1988: 4 Demos. BADLANDS represents the pinnacle of Jake's music. As such, it boasts many rare tracks, and this album features eight treasures. The content is broadly divided into two parts: the first four are demos for his debut album (only "The Last Time" made it onto his second album). These previously known takes have been digitized for this album from tapes owned by the late Ray Gillan. 1991-1992: 4 Officially Rare Tracks. Next up are tracks produced after his second album, "VOODOO HIGHWAY," but they are extremely rare. "Time Goes By," a track written for the World Athletics Championships, is also a rare track, having only been released as a Japanese CD single, but it's still a rare treat. Even more precious is "Want To Live With You." This song, written at the request of a Japanese friend, was actually the theme song for a local bank commercial in Wakayama Prefecture. This rare track was only available on a non-commercial CD single distributed exclusively at this bank. It features Ray's vocals, as well as an instrumental B-side. The final track is "Jade's Song," a familiar track from the debut album. While originally recorded acoustically on the album, this take adds electric instruments, similar to the live performances from that time. Although released under his solo name, the performances were by BADLANDS. Post-BADLANDS: 1994's WICKED ALLIANCE (4 tracks). After BADLANDS, Jake re-released an album with his 1996 solo album, "A FINE PINK MIST," but prior to that, he had also started another project: the elusive band WICKED ALLIANCE. Its members included Jimmy Bain and Mandy Lion, formerly of WWIII, and Ray Luzier, who would later join KORN. WWIII was originally a band formed by Jimmy and Vinny Appice, but Vinny and Tracy G joined the band to rebuild DIO. Jake joined the remaining Jimmy and Muddy. Although they didn't end up releasing an album, they did produce demos, which comprise the four tracks on this album. While they may seem a little underwhelming, they're actually quite a find. Those familiar with WWIII might guess that Mandy's vocals are very similar to Paul Di'Anno's, with a more aggressive style (closer to Di'Anno's in the Killers). While BADLANDS was a mellow blues-rock band, WICKED ALLIANCE seems to have aimed for a heavier, more Ozzy Osbourne-era sound, allowing us to enjoy Jake's metallic, ripping guitar for the first time in a while. After BADLANDS: 2000's BOURGEOIS PIGS (1 track) and another legendary band: BOURGEOIS PIGS. This super-band project, centered around SHARK ISLAND's Richard Black and Michael Guy, features Tony Franklin (formerly of BLUE MURDER/WHITESNAKE) on bass and Matt Sorum (formerly of GUNS N' ROSES) on drums. It features the project's only remaining demo, "Calamities Of Vanity." He also appeared on Ozzy Osbourne's final album, BACK TO THE BEGINNING (two songs). In the 21st century, Jake's activities stagnated. Despite guest appearances on his second solo album, "RETRACED" (2005) and ENUFF Z'NUFF's "DISSONANCE" (2009), he went into semi-retirement. He then returned with his new band, RED DRAGON CARTEL, releasing two studio albums, "RED DRAGON CARTEL" (2014) and "PATINA" (2018). Jake continued to suffer from misfortune, including carpal tunnel syndrome and being caught up in a shooting (!). However, he made a comeback with an appearance at Ozzy Osbourne's retirement event, "BACK TO THE BEGINNING." The album concludes with new tracks, "The Ultimate Sin" and "Shot in the Dark," both of which were performed at this historic event. Backed by an all-star metal band, featuring Ozzy Osbourne associates Adam Wakeman and Mike Bordin, as well as former MEGADETH member David Ellefson, the album boasts a powerful lineup. Fronting the album also features rising stars like Halestorm's Lizzie Hale and Disturbed's David Draiman. Nuno Bettencourt's performance is particularly impressive. He provides solid support for Jake on his first stage performance since the shooting, even casually stepping off stage once he was sure he could finish, allowing the spotlight to fall on him. "Jake's Back!" was a major highlight of the event, and Nuno was the driving force behind it. This collection of 18 treasures features a career previously only seen in biographies, from the early days of famous bands to elusive projects.
