This is a rare live recording that documents Henry Cow's transitional period, when bassist John Greaves left the band in March 1976 and was replaced by Georgie Born in May of the same year. This recording was made on May 26, 1976 in Trondheim, Norway, with Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, Tim Hodgkinson, and Lindsay Cooper performing while Georgie Born was practicing Henry Cow repertoire. This groundbreaking live performance, composed entirely of improvisation, is the quintessence of Henry Cow, and creates an extremely avant-garde sound, making full use of musique concrète-style tape loops reminiscent of The Beatles' "Revolution 9." It is a magnificent collage of sounds with a kaleidoscope-like, ever-changing composition, including elements of ethnic music from Africa, India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, spacey parts reminiscent of German rock, and parts that express a detailed ensemble that seems to have been composed in advance. However, it is by no means redundant and boring, as is common in modern music performances, and has a high level of perfection that is like a suite, with a clear sense of a story that runs through the whole piece. Fred Frith's experimental spirit and presence are overwhelming, as he is tireless in pursuing the possibilities of the guitar as an instrument. You can hear Dagmar Krause's voice in some places, but she is not participating in this live performance, so it is likely to be on tape. This is the extreme north of rock music, true progressive rock.
