The Gil Evans Orchestra is featured in a soundboard recording of the historic jazz festival in Antibes, France, which was released in recent years (2024). Although it is called an "orchestra," as you can see from the members, it is a small big band, so there is no need to be afraid. Some people who are not jazz fans may not be familiar with him, but he is one of the leading composers in the jazz world. If you like Carla Bley or Michael Mantler, you may be hooked. In the first place, Gil Evans was a person who had a great influence on early Miles, no doubt a great influence. In the 1970s, he also took a rock approach, releasing a cover album of Jimi Hendrix songs. "STONE FREE" is also played in this live performance. As I wrote at the beginning, it doesn't have much of an "orchestral" feel, and it feels like a jazz rock band with a slightly larger number of members. If you like jazz rock, this is a title that you will definitely enjoy.
