This release isn't a '70s archive tape, but a recent VH1 re-broadcast of "Best of Midnight Special." The picture and sound quality are exceptional, easily ripe for official release as archival footage. At just 22 minutes long, this is perhaps the only comprehensive look at the band's later career, following the arrival of Tetsu Yamauchi. While every track is captivating, emanating a '70s vibe, the highlight is undoubtedly the first track, a cover of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Rock 'n' Roller." On guitar for this track, none other than Keith Richards and Ron Wood are playing. With Ian McLagan pounding away on piano behind them, the stage is a sight straight out of The Rolling Stones. But the man taking the microphone is... the shining golden Rod Stewart! Despite the vast differences in status and career, this song brings together two of Britain's greatest rock 'n' roll bands, offering a glimpse into the future. It's a truly luxurious track, a glimpse of glorious British rock! (Incidentally, Keith, Ronnie, Rod, and Ian had performed together in July of that year in Kilburn to celebrate the completion of Ronnie's first solo album, so perhaps they wanted to have another go at this lineup.) It's a treasured sight for fans of The Faces, but as a fan of The Rolling Stones, even the slightest facial expression on this footage is even more entertaining. We hope you'll enjoy it for years to come, along with the impeccable live album "San Bernardino 1975." Live at Gaumont State Cinema, Kilburn, London, UK 23rd December 1974 PRO-SHOT (22:20) 1.
