The latest live album of the blockbuster “Everything Under The Sun Suite” is now available. EXTREME was on their 9th Japan tour until recently. Since their reunion, they have entertained us with live shows with different tastes every time, but the highlight this time is a reproduction of a 20-minute long song that occupies "The Truth" of their 3rd album "III SIDES TO EVERY STORY". This is the most epic and complex song in EXTREME's history, and this performance in Japan was the first time in the world that it was played live on stage. This work is an audience album that depicts such an important tour in the band's history with super-excellent sound. Let's start with an overview of the monument tour. ・September 29th: Showa Women's University Hitomi Memorial Auditorium ・September 30th: Team Smile Sendai PIT ・October 3rd: Amashin Archaic Hall ・October 4th: ZEPP NAGOYA ・October 5th: Tokyo Dome City Hall [This work] The above 5 performances are all on this schedule. This work includes the final day, “October 5, 2016: Tokyo Dome City Hall Performance.” The biggest point of this work is the ultimate audience sound. It is definitely an audience recording because it directly uses the master given to it by the recording artist, but the sound that flows from it is far from what you would associate with the word “audience”. Even the term ``soundboard'' is lukewarm with the extremely thick, straight-pitched sound that comes out with zero sense of distance. "What part of you is not a soundboard?" I want to mutter into the speaker. However, the natural "ringing" is at a level where you can run away with your bare feet from the sound board connected directly to the desk, and the exquisite balance, including the very slight clapping, is like a broadcast sound source that has been carefully mixed by a professional. It's what you might call an "ideal sound." EXTREME's show with such quality is wonderful as usual. As expected, Gary Cherone's crisp action is not there, but his wonderful singing voice and the funky groove of the rhythm section are also depicted in great detail. And what is truly impressive is Nuno Bettencourt's many feats. In the late 1980s, when Guitar Hero's Sengoku period was starting to get boring, his technique, which was all the rage in its "final form" along with Paul Gilbert, has not diminished or shown even the slightest decline. Every detail of the exquisite picking nuances and tone controls is poured into the song with a direct feel that connects directly to your brain. I'm really sorry to be repeating myself, but I wonder if this is really an audience recording... And the set list drawn by that virtuosity is also wonderful. From the only reunion album, ``SAUDADES DE ROCK'', there is only one song ``Take Us Alive'', and a group of famous songs from ``EXTREME'' to ``WAITING FOR THE PUNCHLINE'' are performed with a great sense of balance. Under such circumstances, the biggest highlight is the masterpiece “Everything Under The Sun”. The studio album was also a masterpiece of 21 and a half minutes, but this work is even longer, reaching 25 minutes. By the time this song was released in 1992, "progressive rock" had long become an obsolete word, but its dramatic, beautiful, and complex songwriting is truly progressive. EXTREME has become famous for their funky grooves and ballads, but you can experience the moment when their "core" high level of musicality and aesthetic sense blooms all at once on stage. The final number, “We Are the Champions,” inherits this aesthetic sense. It goes without saying that it is a super famous song by QUEEN, but this year's Asian tour is the first time they will perform it. After all, EXTREME is a band that Brian May himself acknowledged as ``understanding what QUEEN is more than anyone else.'' Since it is a historical super masterpiece that is a symbol of QUEEN written by them, its depth and emotion are immeasurable. The show closes with a chorus and a large denouement that is a little different from the original. “Good sound, good sound, good performance”...I have repeated these three essential elements of a great album over and over again. It is a masterpiece among masterpieces with all three of them in top quality. I'll stop talking about things like "official/underground" and "soundboard/audience". Great music and the best live performances are here. That's all there is to it; there's nothing more important than that. This is a masterpiece of a live album that will make you feel that way.
