Eric Clapton's 200th performance in Japan was a hot topic during his recent Japan tour, but this time we will release an unreleased new master of his first performance in Japan! The venue is, of course, the memorable Nippon Budokan. Until now, the sound source of this day has been released under the titles "SINGING THE BLUES POWER", "FIRST VISIT, FIRST NIGHT", and "FIRST CONCERT IN JAPAN", but this time we have obtained a completely unreleased master. Moreover, it is completely recorded. As for the sound quality, since it is a cassette recording from 40 years ago, the sound image is mono and contains hiss noise, but while the previously released version is recorded with a relatively vivid sound close to the stage, the annoying audience noise of the nearby audience who were flying up on their first visit to Japan was captured everywhere. It is true that there were some parts that were disappointing. On the other hand, the sound image of this album captures the sound from the stage widely from a place one step back from the stage (probably the stand seats), and although it is not very vivid, it is very well balanced and stable. In particular, Carl Deidre's bass is properly captured, and even in the tumultuous Layla, you can confirm that his bass line is the same as the original version, and even Jamie Oldaker's rim shot can be heard clearly. There is a sense of scale that overlooks the whole, and the sound quality is easy to listen to. The part where the noise was severe at the end of I Shot The Sheriff in the original master, and the missing part that seems to be due to the tape change at the beginning of Little Rachel, have been jointed seamlessly on the already released version. Above all, the encore was not included in the already released press CD "SINGING THE BLUES POWER", so I think it is valuable to be able to listen to the entire first performance in Japan with the easy-to-listen-to sound quality of this board. Thinking back, it was quite an adventure for Clapton, who was visiting Japan for the first time and did not know how popular or well-known he was, to have three new songs (Better Make It Through Today, Singing The Blues, Little Rachel) set at the time. Listening to it now, I understand that he was in a transitional period after recording "THERE'S ONE IN EVERY CROWD", but I think he was quite interested in performing unfamiliar numbers in an unknown country. That's why, on the American tour just before, he had drunk and played around with MCs, but here he proceeds on stage without much playfulness between songs. In his first country, Japan, he probably had his own expectations. This board, which captures the situation at that time in detail, can be said to be the "origin" that you should listen to now that he has performed in Japan more than 200 times. Please enjoy the full picture of Clapton's first performance in Japan with a good sound without any particular trouble.
