Miraculously, a recording of a Purple live performance featuring Randy California, who replaced Richie on guitar for one night after he fell ill with hepatitis during a North American tour just before the band's legendary first visit to Japan in 1972, has been unearthed. This recording was taken at a Quebec, Canada, concert on April 6th of that year, and while records indicate that he played guitar in place of Richie, fans worldwide have been astonished that such a recording ever existed. Not only is it a miracle that such a rare live performance is even available, but the sound quality is also quite good for the era. While the final track, "Lucille," is missing, the rest of the set, spanning nearly 80 minutes, is fully recorded. The set also includes familiar tracks from the original "Live in Japan" album, including "When a Blind Man Cries," a song never before performed by Richie on guitar. Incidentally, since Randy was a last-minute substitute, it's said that Randy and the band hadn't even had a full rehearsal before the show. Despite this, the performance is incredibly cohesive, and you can hear Randy's signature Jimi Hendrix playing here and there. This is a rare and valuable recording.
