Summarizing the glorious history of DEEP PURPLE... No, this is a reprint of a masterpiece documentary that takes you back 30 years. The documentary is “HEAVY METAL PIONEERS”. This is an official history piece produced in 1991 during the Joe Lynn Turner era. It was released to the general public on VHS and laser discs, but due to the fate of video software at the time, it was quickly discontinued. Later, at the end of 2002, just before the 35th anniversary, it was made into an official DVD, but that was long ago out of print. It is now difficult to obtain. This work is a detailed reprint from the Japanese laser disc, which is the first release version of such official footage. Complete with Japanese subtitles, this is a movie that you can thoroughly enjoy. It is natural that it is completely official quality since it is an official video, but what is noteworthy is the content. At our store, we have introduced various documentary works by DEEP PURPLE, but this work is one of them that is quite unique. The production is an orthodox one that interweaves live footage from each era with interviews with the members. This work was produced in 1991, when rock documentaries were still new, so the episodes that appear are basic (the basics of member changes, the transition to Harlock, the Montreux fire, Cali Jam, etc.). Many of the live footage, which at the time surprised me with their preciousness, are now familiar. “Stormbringer” from the Tommy Bolin era makes you say “!!” for a moment, but this is also a mime that covers the studio take with live footage of other songs. The picture and sound are also out of sync, and the rough feel is reminiscent of 30 years ago, which makes me smile. Yes, the point of this work is this "30-year-old feel". The materials may seem a bit new now, but the scent of ``1991'' that oozes out here and there is refreshing. First of all, Joe Lynn Turner, a symbol of the time, appears. He was present in Ritchie's interview and said, ``When we started the band in '68, we were copying Vanilla Fudge...but they thought we were innovative. But I was surprised that I could earn money from copying,'' he said, nodding as if he was impressed by Richie's anecdotes from the 70s. Of course, at the end of the story, which takes place in the present day (1991), he says, ``I have no intention of competing with Ian...I intend to leave behind more achievements than him,'' and says that he has ``a wealth of future prospects.'' Now that I know what happened immediately after, I can appreciate the sense of humor. Bruce Payne is comparable to Joe. He was the manager of RAINBOW, which led to him also working on DEEP PURPLE, and in this work he says, ``Richie's unique sound, John's organ, and Ian (Pace)'s rhythm keep...the fusion of these is deep. It's purple.'' At the time, it was nothing more than an ordinary comment, but with Ritchie's subsequent departure, Bruce is said to have become a key decision-maker alongside Ian Gillan. The band decided to continue even after Jon Lord left, and stubbornly refused to allow Richie to attend the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame award ceremony. Now that I know about the current blues, I can hear the honest comments strangely, and I am acutely aware of the changing times. And the final scene is the climax of such emotion. The late Jon Lord speaks while playing "Cut Runs Deep" on the piano. When I write down those words... "I want to continue until 1999 and celebrate my 25th anniversary. I think it'll be fun. I want to say on stage, 'I've been doing this for 25 years already. It's been a quarter of a century. I can't believe it.''It doesn't make sense to celebrate the 25th anniversary in 1999, but that's how it feels. This is the true nature of the sense of time that surrounds this work. True to his words, John continued with DEEP PURPLE until 2002, and passed away in 2012. Now, 8 years have passed, but DEEP PURPLE still exists. Now that we know about its history, it is a piece that gives off a completely different flavor than it did back then. A documentary masterpiece that makes 30 years feel heavy.
