DEEP PUEPLE has had many professional shots since the '70s (both official and collector's items), and their live and stage performances are well known. Among the various remaining videos, the most unique and memorable is the footage known as the "Leeds Polytechnic Project" among overseas enthusiasts. This work "LONDON 1974" is a DVD of the "Leeds Polytechnic Project" in a high quality that is incomparable to previous releases. It is a must-see for all PURPLE fans, capturing the real appearance of the third generation PURPLE at live performances, backstage, and interviews! This video was produced by students at the University of Leeds in the UK as part of a "college project" in 1974, and is a video work themed on DEEP PURPLE. It consists of a total of 40 minutes of live performances at the London "Hammersmith Odeon" on May 9, 1974, and backstage interviews at the London "Lewisham Odeon" on May 12. The contents start with a live performance of "Burn", followed by interviews with the four members (Ritchie was interviewed in his own room), Jon Lord's organ solo (including "Theme of 2001"), the intro to "Space Truckin'", an interview with John, and finally Ritchie's guitar solo in the second half of "Space Truckin'". This video, which allows you to enjoy the 1974 London performance with a high-quality (for the time) professional shot, has been a very famous video material among enthusiasts for a long time, and has appeared in a wide variety of forms since the VTR era. This work uses the recently released Eumatic Master directly, and is a DVD of a quality that can be said to be the highest ever. The screen, which seems to be a bit reddish-brown film, gives a sense of the era, but the clear image quality and solid sound quality (which you wouldn't think was produced by a student) that surpass all previous releases are a professional-level sight. The performances and interviews are very valuable, and the level is such that it seems possible to broadcast on television or even record on the official album. If you are a fan interested in PURPLE, we can say that this is a must-see and must-have! "Burn" is shot in full length from the intro, using various camera angles, so you can enjoy it just like an official video. Richie, who was mainly seen from behind in California Jam, is shot from the front for the key parts. There is a lot of action, and the stage effects such as lighting and smoke create a live stage atmosphere to the fullest. Of course, not only Richie, but also Coverdale singing passionately and Glenn moving up and down the stage can be seen perfectly. John and Pace have a strong presence. The main point is that the audience is also vividly filmed, and you can see the audience entering the performance as if in a trance, and fans who are too excited and are taken away by security. While it is an excellent live video, the video beautifully captures the excitement of a live performance in the early '70s, and you can feel the enthusiasm of the students who tried to convey rock as a "new culture" and a "reflection of the times". Following "Burn", there are interviews with the four members other than Richie and a scene from the dressing room. In this backstage scene, you can see Coverdale's (still fresh!) expression shortly after joining the band, John leading the band with his words like an elder, and Glenn already looking dignified. Here, it is also worth noting that Richie's guitar solo and guitar crash patterns (of course professional shots) are used to accompany the members' comments. Then we move on to an individual interview with Richie. It is very rare for Richie to be so talkative and cheerful in response to the interviewer's questions. Don't miss the scene where the office scenery of "Purple Record" decorated with a row of gold discs appears from the content of the conversation. After the four interviews are over, "Space Truckin'" begins. The scene where John's keyboard solo featuring "Also Sprach Zarathustra" leads to a dramatic intro is also worth watching, and you can enjoy the interaction between John and Glen. It's a shame that the interview returns just as the guitar comes in and the main part of the song begins! The second half of "Space Truckin'", which includes an interview with John, also focuses on John, and you can see the climax scene at the end. At the end, the interview audio is inserted against the backdrop of the audience going crazy with the excitement of the live show, and the 40-minute video concludes. It goes without saying that the performance scenes and interviews are valuable, but as mentioned above, this video is unique in that it treats DEEP PURPLE's live show and the audience enjoying it as a "new culture" and a "reflection of the times". If it were just the live show from this period, the official video of "California Jam" would be enough, but the unique perspective of this video makes it still highly valuable. This work, which realistically depicts the third generation of PURPLE from live and backstage, is a must-see and must-have for all PURPLE fans.
