After the departure of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, the third generation of DEEP PURPLE, which started with unknown newcomer David Coverdale and former TRAPEZE member Glenn Hughes, completed "BURN" at the end of 1973 (released in early 1974). They started their live activities with a short European tour in December of the same year, not only to warm up the whole band but also to get the inexperienced Coverdale used to the PURPLE stage. The dates were booked over the New Year holidays, and after the New Year's break, the band restarted with a performance in Paris, France on January 20th. They performed a total of 10 shows (5 of which were in January 1974) until the performance in Düsseldorf, Germany on the 26th. The stage in Stuttgart included in this work is the fourth performance in 1974. Due to the state of the master, the sound image is somewhat unstable in some scenes, but it has been corrected as much as possible in the remastering process, and the sound is clearly easier to listen to than the source known among traders (of course the pitch is normal). From the opening "Burn", the performance can be confirmed with a certain brightness overall, and Richie's guitar in particular has a clear tone from the beginning, as well as his solos and backing. Coverdale's performance has improved since December '73, just after the start of the tour, and he sings his own songs. Glen's chorus is also close to the album (as represented by "Burn"), and the band is playing cohesively. The set list has already been solidified at this point, with familiar numbers such as "Might Just Take Your Life", "Lay Down Stay Down" and "Mistreated". You can see that they are already preparing for the US tour (more specifically, the California Jam on April 6th). At the moment when Richie's free solo changes to the riff of "Smoke On The Water", the applause and peaceful mood of the venue quickly changes to cheers and enthusiasm. This excitement is a big listening point in this recording. Glen's unique singing and shouts, and Jon Lord's organ are also very impressive. "You Fool No One" is a passionate performance of over 13 minutes, sandwiched between Richie's solo. This is a scene that can be said to be the highlight of the live. Unfortunately, the recording of "Space Truckin'" ends in just over 3 minutes (probably due to tape break), but for just under 60 minutes, this recording will entertain you with good brightness and balance of the precious live performance in the early part of '74. Many sound sources of the third period PURPLE live are known after the US tour in March '74. Valuable takes are also being unearthed for the UK tour from April to May, such as the Sheffield performance at "BURN IN SHEFFIELD" which included the encore at that time. But the value of this album, which was recorded at a live performance in early 1974, is no less valuable than those other albums.
