This 2024 edition of the ultimate, complete reissue of "Diamond Dogs" vintage analog audio: David Bowie / Diamond Dogs: Premium Master Collection (Reel Master Tape, US 8-Track Tape, UK Cassette Tape, and RCA Original CD First Press) features four original audio sources! Released in May 1974, "Diamond Dogs" marked Bowie's departure from his fictional role as Ziggy Stardust, following his 1960s covers album "Pinups." Inspired by George Orwell's science fiction novel "1984," Bowie planned to adapt the work into a musical, but the author's widow rejected the idea. Instead, Bowie assumed the role of half-man, half-beast, prophesying a decadent future. "Diamond Dogs" reached #1 in the UK Albums Chart and #5 on the US Billboard, earning him a gold disc. The lead singles, "Rebel Rebel" and "Diamond Dogs," were also hits around the world. The "Diamond Dogs Tour" began in North America in June 1974. It launched with a theatrical show featuring a large-scale stage set, props, and other equipment based on the album's concept. However, due to enormous expenses and numerous problems, the lavish theater set was abandoned after just two months. After recording his follow-up album, "Young Americans," in August, the tour resumed in October with a simpler stage and band arrangement, known as "The Soul Tour." This album is an interesting example of a transitional period in David Bowie's 1970s, when he embraced soul music and transformed into a completely different direction. The first half of the CD features the original analog audio from the reel-to-reel master released in 1974. The freshness of the sound, as close to the original as possible, is a perfect reproduction of the original analog source, unlike later digital remasters. The CD also includes a rare, limited-edition 8-track cartridge tape recording from the 1970s. This recording offers a dynamic, mono-like sound with enhanced vocals and alternate mixes with different stereo separations. The cartridge tape's unique track order and inter-track editing, which ignore the original, have been restored with noise correction and faithful reproduction. The DVD includes the audio DVD, featuring the reel master from the CD in high-quality, high-resolution audio (96 kHz/24-bit PCM stereo). Additionally, the DVD includes an 8-track cartridge tape recording with a different mix and track order, a cassette tape recording with inferior sound quality but still featuring the unique track order and sound quality of analog, and the original RCA CD from 1984, a CD that is now rare and highly sought after. This allows you to experience the sound of the original analog era, unlike the digital remasters currently available.
