This work is a valuable demo session sound source of Cozy Powell's 3rd solo "OCTOPUSS" released in 1983, which was created from three "EMI Britannia Row Studio" tapes in Cozy's collection. By applying careful remaster treatment here, we have achieved the finest sound suitable for enjoying historical sound sources. With its clear sound and direct sound that makes you feel like you're entering the studio through an open door, listeners will feel like they're watching Koji play right in front of their eyes! After listening to this, it was as if I was peering through the window from outside the room. In particular, you will be surprised by the detailed musical sound reproduction in songs such as "Rattler's Revenge (Up On The Downs)" and "Princetown". In addition, the important parts of this work that you absolutely cannot miss can be roughly divided into the following three parts. First of all, you can catch a glimpse of the three-song medley from "633 Squadron" to "The Big Country", which was performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, at the stage of construction, which was the biggest highlight of "OCTOPUSS". ``633 Squadron (Orchestra Rehearsing)'' contains vivid and wide recordings of the London Symphony Orchestra's tuning and the conductor's instructions to the orchestra, making the listener feel as if they are sitting in their seats as one of the orchestra members. It makes me feel good. In the following song, "Octopuss (Bass & Drum Machine)," Colin "Bomber" Hodgkinson plays a unique thick, bouncy bass line, similar to what he heard on WHITESNAKE, over the rhythm of a drum machine. "Big Country", which is the last part of the medley, first records the orchestra's rehearsal with the same realistic on-site sound as "633 Squadron". It is a must-listen to the string tones that can change the expression of the performance just by the conductor's guidance. "Big Country (With Cozy)" is a mix in which Cozy puts drums on an orchestral background, and while the result is close to the finished version, the differences in mix and arrangement are very interesting. And secondly, you can listen to the session takes of "The Rattler" as many as 4 takes, changing the perspective of the members. This song, which connects Cozy and WHITESNAKE, was heard live in "THE RATTLER: THE END OF SINNERS," which became a hot topic as a gift title. In this work, the lineup of Mel Galley, Colin Hodgkinson, and John Lord, which is almost the same as WHITESNAKE, is as tight as if you were listening to a studio live performance, and each of them is demonstrating their abilities. In Version 1, Cozy's drums stand out in the mix. In the subsequent version 2, Mel's guitar comes to the forefront and competes equally with Cozy's drums. Furthermore, in Version 3, Colin's bass is featured, and in the final Version 4, Jon Lord's keyboard is featured, and different mixes are attempted in each of the 4 takes. The charm of British rock overflows with exquisite flavor in every take! By changing the "spice" of the featured member even with the same ingredient, you can enjoy this exquisite "dish" with a variety of seasonings, from funk flavor to bluesy richness, and even DEEP PURPLE flavor! Furthermore, as a special bonus at the end, a rough mix take of "Tender Babes" from Jon Lord's solo album "BEFOR I FORGET", which was produced around the same time as Koji's "OCTOPUSS", is included. This take, like “OCTOPUSS”, was recorded on the tape owned by Cozy. Almost the same take was recorded in “BEFORE I FORGET ROUGH MIX” to be released this time, but this sound source does not feel out of place in this work, which covers the rough mix take of “OCTOPUSS”. The result is almost the same as the one recorded on the album, but it seems to be a test mix just before completion, and Cozy's drums come in a little earlier than the finished version, and the tone feels more vivid, and there are subtle differences that are unique to the demo. I find it interesting. ``BEFORE I FORGET'' and ``OCTOPUSS,'' in which Cozy and John co-starred, have many related aspects such as the production background and participating musicians, and are deeply related to the history of WHITESNAKE from the same period. By listening to both together, you will be able to gain a deeper understanding of their activities from 1982 to 1983. This is a book that you should enjoy along with “BEFORE I FORGET ROUGH MIX”!
